Did Boy Scouts Keep "Perversion Files?"

(CBS) In a Portland, Ore., courtroom, the witness identified as "Jack Doe No. 4" testifies uneasily about being an 11-year-old Boy Scout alone with his troop leader in 1983.

"He grabbed my hand, and he slid it up his leg into his shorts," the witness said.

The troop leader, Timur Dykes, had already admitted to a Scout official that he had molested 17 boys. Still parents were not notified and Dykes continued to work with the Scouts. In a deposition he confessed to abusing Jack Doe No. 4.

Dykes was asked what he did that could be considered molestation.

"I handled his genitals," Dykes said.

But the former troop leader isn't on trial, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone. The case is against the Boy Scouts, who kept confidential files on Dykes and on thousands of molesters, intended to keep them out of scouting but keep the incidents quiet.

"They wanted to just get the guy to go away," said Patrick Boyle, an investigative journalist. "And let's hope he doesn’t show up again. So that means very frequently, nobody told the police."

Now the secrecy is being lifted in an Oregon courtroom.

"The Perversion Files," as the Scouts called them, have rarely been seen publicly -- but now, 20,000 pages have been admitted as evidence in the trial.

"It's shocking to read case after case of sex abuse of men preying on boys," Boyle said. "What's also shocking - you realize how much the Scouts knew."

In a written statement, the Boy Scouts of America says it can't comment on the case in Oregon but says the files are used to track those "not eligible for … membership" and are just one way to "ensure a safe and healthy experience for … Scouts."

However Jack Doe No. 4 says because neither parents nor police were notified the perversion files did nothing to protect him. The abuse haunts him to this day.

"I can't sleep," he said. "Sometimes I go days without sleeping."

He's suing the Boy Scouts for $14 million, saying they should have used the perversion files not to protect the organization -- but to protect the boys.

KEYWORDS: boy; gay; scouts

Just horrible of course like with the gay priests it is always about the church or the scouts not about the individuals and their perverted orientation.

The Boy Scouts, of which I was one, should have been actively pulling these offenders out and should be been helping with legal proceedings against them.

When I was a boy scout, we had a gay FBI agent as one of the scoutmasters. He was a creep. This older kid Charlie would take all the new kids aside and give them the talk.

"Bouton is a fag!" he'd tell us. "If he sticks his hand in your back pocket, crack him across the head with a log, or come get me and I'll do it for you."

Charlie was a great kid. He died in the Army when his Jeep rolled over in Nevada.

The boy scout chaplain, Father Tom, was gay too. He left the priest hood to live with his boyfriend. He never bothered any of the boys.

The other priest in our parish was a child molestor. He went on to become Monseignor. Cheplic was his name. The creep eventually got outed by three men that he abused in their youth.

For some reason, he was allowed to retire and was never prosecuted.

Somehow, I escaped these weirdos all normal!

Excuse my cynicism, but this little saga has been replayed so many times now, I’m beginning to think the most braindead lib judge on the continent would have to get electroshock to stay awake during the court sessions.

Of course, that assumes that any “right thinking” person would bother to question the already published judgment of the only court that really counts in a deal like this....the Media pukes that the complaintant’s lawyer has on call to publish stuff like this.

I call BS....on the story, the media that published it and the screwed-up-beyond-redemption legal system that allows themselves to pi$$ away their last dregs of credibility by allowing this kind of crap to go on. Again. Ad nauseum.

The Boy Scouts have strict rules when it comes to adult interaction with boys. For example, an adult is not allowed to sleep in the same tent as a boy who is not his son, and every camp-out must have at least two adults present for this very reason.

What group was it who insisted that the Scouts should be forced to take on homosexual adults as leaders?

Sad that this happened. I wish it had not. That being said the blame should not be on the BSA but rather the Troop management which includes the Charter Organization and various troop level leaders. And parents should ALWAYS be aware of what their scouts are doing and who they are with. The BSA has very little to do with actual troop operation. This church should not have a charter.
