“The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.”
While often attributed to Thomas Jefferson, the quote is actually from Wendell Phillips.
But it is always true, and will be until the LORD comes again.

At that time, a trash 80 was state of the art of personal computers. I used one to first get online to a local dialup BBS in 1978. Used a 100-150 baud acoustic modem. On long distance! The excitement of reading all those messages (in sloooow scrolling text) and the nervous self consciousness typing in the first reply was overpowering.
Used that POS computer to run the payroll for a small company for several years, though. And I still have that original machine somewhere... along with a later original Osbourne and a luggable Compaq. Right next to the dinky 8” Motorola b&w TV that we watched the first televised election night on when Eisenhower won.

Mine evolved from a play on words when I was emailing my wife. One of us wrote “thank you” and the other wrote “donkey shane”. That was followed quickly by “donkey shame” which reminded me of Don Quixote which led to donkey odie and finally to Donkey Odious...which pretty much sums up my political leanings.

One day I called up our newly-married sound man, and got his message recorder. Using a sing-song Paki accent I said;
“Oooooh! This is Dr. Bogus Pachysandra from the Cleveland Free Sex Clinic. Don’t touch that thing! Don’t let anybody touch that thing! I’m a doctor and I won’t touch that thing!”
Then I hung up. His new bride got the message first! When Bob got home, he had some ‘splain’ to do! After awhile, they figured out that it had to be me, and called back, laughin’ their butts off!

My Freeper handle is based on my college email. R (for Ron), M (Maximilian, my first middle name) Lew (Lewenberg, my last name.
When I was suspended for an immigration post, I came up with an alternate, Bulan_Sabriel. Bulan Sabriel was the Khagan Bek (Prime minister) of the Khazar empire who embraced Judaism in 740, after the 100 years of wars with the Caliphate. Some of the nobility followed suit including one of my father's ancestors.
