Hi Kanawa I really am not surprised or offended at what is posted to me....we all have different opinions on many different subjects....Hope we can try a truce again, but I will not back down when I am attack. Sometimes scarasm is the best way to deal with some types of replys. (and I am not pointing that remark at you) Have been in some knock down drag out debates on other subjects but can turn around and totally agree with that person on a different subject....thats freeping.

Funny, pit bull defenders remind of Muslim apologists. Whenever there is an attack, their instinctive first concern is that the attack makes the religion/breed look bad, not damage done to the victim.

Heavens no!

I thought nothing of the sort.

They are my great love and I’m very aware of their potential for harm.

That is why mine were/are trained *positively* at all times and in all ways.

I *love* a good Dobermann more than just about anything else.

I hate seeing broken, destroyed and abused ones just as much.

Your friend was so fortunate in his dog’s longevity.
14 was the oldest I ever had.
[which why I was very nervous about getting another...when they leave you, it hurts like no other dog does]

God bless you for your rescue work.
That takes a courageous yet kind person.

Console yourself that you, at least, give them a taste of the love they deserved but never got.

I have rescued Dobes that technically shouldn’t even still been alive...yet *all* of them, even the most extreme “hard cores” responded to love and proper redirection within a 30 day period.

A lot of them found forever homes with friends and family...most just stayed here...:)
[yep, I’m a sucker for a sob story”]

Ironically, the *only* dog who ever actually bit me was a Border Collie.
I was about 8 or 9 and my parents were leaving for a neighbor’s funeral when she rushed into our yard and scraped my elbow with her front teeth.

[she’d just had puppies and was a little flakey about her pups, I reckon]

She was a neighbor’s dog so my parents went to the funeral and I got taken for a tetanus shot when they came home.

End of story.

Again, thanks for your work with the unwanted.
Know that you make a huge difference to them, if only for a little while.

This was written by a shelter worker.

BYE BABY.

No more lonely cold nights or hearing that I’m bad
No more growling belly from the meals I never had
No more scorching sunshine with a water bowl that’s dry
No more complaining neighbors about the noise when I cry.

No more hearing “shut up”, “get down” or “get out of here”!
No more feeling disliked, only peace is in the air.
Euthanasia is a blessing, though some still can’t see
why I was ever born If I weren’t meant to be.

My last day of living was the best I ever had.
Someone held me very close, I could see she was very sad.
I kissed the lady’s face, and she hugged me as she cried.
I wagged my tail to thank her, then I closed my eyes and died.

In the post to which I presume you are responding, I described actual sentiments expressed by the responders to your thread.

You, on the other hand, are ascribing unexpressed motive and supposition to an entire group, the individual and/or collective mind of which you cannot possibly hope to read, let alone understand.

Leave clairvoyance to those truly gifted.

That is why, despite constant urging from the local shelter director, I could not work or volunteer there.

I adopted dogs like crazy and did my part that way...but I couldn’t bear the loving and playing with the ones I knew would die.

I did it once and my dog for the day was a beautiful white Borzoi.

He was “gone” the next time I came in and that was it for me.

How could _no one_ have wanted that beautiful, gentle, glorious dog?

My first Ibizan was from that same shelter.
No one noticed her for 3 weeks [far past her kill date] but the ladies couldn’t bear to put her down.

I found her on what I later learned was her last day on earth, nearly at closing time...just minutes from her “walk down that hall”.

She was huddled on damp concrete floor with only a thin blanket for a bed.
I called her and slowly, she looked around at me.

She came over to the door and I stuck in my fingers to touch her...and she bit me!
Marie and Debby looked like their world had just ended.
The dog just -bit- her last and only hope!

I looked up at Marie and said “You better get my dog outta this damn cage.”.

They laughed and cried, simultaneously.

[I always thought the nip was for “What TOOK you so long to FIND me, jerk?!?]...:]

“Minny” stood on her hind legs beside me as I signed her adoption papers [they always had some pre-filled-out for me on hand...LOL] like a person and when we went outside, she went straight for MY car, parked amongst all the others.

We were inseparable for 13 years and she literally saved my life, twice.
[paybacks are a...miracle]....:)

I grieved endlessly for her for a whole year and then settled into near-daily tears for another 7.

She was my heart.

She has own special page, too.

Oh, how I still love and miss my girl.

Yes, you are right, those guns running down the street on their own are terrifying.. I just blow up those guns with my 20G boom gun gone.

Are you familiar with the term “non-sequitur”?

Thank you so much.
She was beautiful in so many ways.

She *adored* little girls and would drag me across the pet store just to nuzzle them.

[The only person who’d loved her whole life, prior to the dog pound, was a 3 year old girl. I think she was still looking for her until the very end]

“non-sequitur”?!?

Hell, that wasn’t even coherent or linear and you’re worried about non-sequiters?

I HAVE looked up the stats. Perhaps you haven’t, or you misunderstood them, because every single reputable study’s authors, from the CDC to the AVMA to the National Canine Research Council all say that owner irresponsibility is the most important aspect of dog attacks. Considering the overall bite numbers and the death toll have not risen since pit bulls became popular, it is only rational to conclude that the breed of dog is far less important than the type of person who owns it.

I am not anti-Pit or anti-Gun.

Like a Gun expert (which I am), I want people to acknowledge that they are dangerous and to treat them with respect and I advocate additional legal penalties for their neglectful or illegal use or misuse that results in death or grievous bodily injury.

I work with dogs professionally, and I own a Bull Mastiff (often mistaken for a Pit Bull by the ignorant). Unlike the “my widdle dooger wouldn't ever hurt anything” Pit Bull-sh*t meme that so many have bought into; I fully acknowledge that my Bull Mastiff is more likely to act violently towards a dog or human than most other breeds (it is what she was bred for) and MUCH more capable of inflicting death or injury.

If a Gun expert saw people leaving their guns laying around among children, and laughing that they were harmless and wouldn’t hurt anybody; would you conclude he was “anti-Gun” for pointing out the error?

Who on this thread has claimed that pit bulls are harmless?

My initial post on this thread was in response to someone who said that Pit Bulls were not just fighters but multi-purpose dogs, and that they were bred to not be human aggressive.

I pointed out that someone needs to go ‘back to the drawing board’ with the breed in that case because one of those “multi” purposes was to be a guard dog, and a guard dog is expected to act aggressively towards humans (otherwise it isn't much of a guard dog). I pointed out that the Pit Bull is the dog of choice for Gangbangers to protect their crack houses and/or meth labs. And they do it because a couple Pit Bulls in the yard will bark at people, act aggressive, and BITE you if you get into their yard.

I have encountered far too many human aggressive Pit Bulls to buy for even a second that they are somehow ‘not human aggressive’.

Those that wish to downplay the violent potential, and the potential for dangerous violence with this breed (and many other breeds, including my semi-sweet Bull Mastiff) are not doing themselves any favors.
