PORTLAND, Ore.- An Oregon man said he set a world record for the classic video game "Asteroids" by racking up 41,338,740 points during an attempt broadcast on the Internet.

John McAllister said his feat began Saturday at a friend's house near Portland and ended at 10:18 p.m. Monday with 41,338,740, beating the 27-year-old official record for the game of 41,336,440 points, Wired magazine reported.

The player said his strategy involved accumulating points until he earned enough extra lives to give him time to stretch, eat and use the bathroom.

The entire three-day gaming session was streamed live on Justin.tv.

McAllister must now submit his record, along with video and other required proof of the feat, to official video game score keeping organization Twin Galaxies.

In pursuit of the record, did the officials allow ‘Saucer Hunting?’ This was a strategy in which a skilled player could leave 1 small asteroid in a level and ‘hunt’ all the small saucers for big points that would enter the level very aggressively. Skilled players could shoot the saucers for hours on end without shooting the last asteroid on the level or losing their life. It was a great way to run up a score.

I know Atari released an EPROM revision early on that prevented people from doing this. I don’t know if that was used. I think you can tell if the revised ROMs were being used by looking at the copyright info on the screen.

Gravitar had a similar exploit, but that game was too difficult to begin with for the casual gamer and failed miserably in the arcades despite being a rather good game.
