Now being installed by a Japanese car manufacturer, the Accelerator Force Feedback Pedal (AFFP) gives warning of dangerous situations by vibrating and exerting counter pressure in the accelerator pedal. This should make the driver take his foot off the pedal and brake. With the aim of reducing accidents and CO2 emissions Continental's AFFP reaches market production for the first time. The system relies on warning the driver through sensory stimulation. The hazard warning is felt directly by the driver's foot, making him aware of the situation so that he can react. The pedal can also help to drive at...

Outrage comes easy at the sight of 15-year-old Disney Channel billion-dollar phenomenon Miley Cyrus -- known to screaming 8-year-old girls as Hannah Montana -- appearing barebacked with a come-hither smile in a photo shoot for Vanity Fair. Did no one understand how the slinky satin-sheet photo would be greeted by the eyes of teenage boys -- or men twice her age? Parents are covering the eyes of their Disney-drenched little girls while their role model has a train wreck. Do we need another Britney Spears Show? But teenage boys are going wilder this week over a more dangerous cultural low:...

In the mail today, I received a catalog from "The Lighter Side" (Memorable Gifts That Delight, Entertain and Amuse). On page 11, amidst the assorted tidbits that include Betty Boop, Elvis, and John Wayne items, I came across the "NEW! > Save the Earth One Turn At A Time!" Earth-Opoly game. A steal at only $29.98, the advertisement says, "100% recyclable board game teaches easy 'green' tips as players become caretakers of wondrous locations around the planet and increase property values by collecting Carbon Credits and trading them for clean air!" While encouraging a clean environment is good, the link...

NEW YORK -- A company has created a pair of online video games based on Sept. 11, much to the chagrin of those who lost loved ones in the terror attacks. "I find it very disturbing," said Lee Ielpi, whose son was a New York City firefighter who died at ground zero. In one of the games, "New York Defender II" ("New York Defender" is its predecessor), a handful of jets roar over a map of New York City. Circles around the planes piloted by terrorists change from green to red, and they dart toward some of Manhattan's most prominent...

The joystick has brought Ben Stiller nothing but sorrow. Industry expectations for "The Heartbreak Kid," the date movie that re-teamed him with the Farrelly brothers (the duo who made him a megastar in "There's Something About Mary"), called for a $20 million to $25 million opening for the film. Instead, "Kid," which cost north of $60 million to make, managed only $14 million in the U.S. and Canada -- heartbreaking, indeed.

Chimps don't mind being chumps in raisin game 19:53 04 October 2007 NewScientist.com news service Roxanne Khamsi Unlike humans, chimpanzees will gladly accept a rotten deal from one another, suggesting they have a very different concept of fairness, a new study shows. Experiments reveal that chimps are more focused on the immediate outcome of a transaction than the overall fairness of the deal. By contrast, people generally place a huge emphasis on equity in deal brokering – so much so that it will cause them to make irrational economic decisions. This is demonstrated, for example, in what's known as the...

WHEN the Republicans in Congress impeached President Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, they insisted that it wasn’t about sex, it was about lying. Of course that wasn’t true. Even at the height of their power-mad self-delusions (when Newt Gingrich was conducting his own affair with an aide while prosecuting the president), Republicans realized that to make lying an impeachable offense was opening a door no politician should eagerly walk through.

A 21-year-old Sydney man has created the first known computer game based on the recent shooting spree at Virginia Tech university in the US, sparking a wave of criticism. The game follows Cho Seung-hui's killing spree at Virginia Tech in April, in which he killed 32 people before turning a gun on himself. The game's creator, Ryan Lambourn, who lives in Sydney's west, says he won't remove the game from his own website or seek to have it removed from amateur game sharing site Newgrounds.com.

U.S. health agency stages bird flu war gameBy Matthew Bigg Apr 27, 2007 ATLANTA (Reuters) - A leading U.S. health agency staged a war game this week to test its response to one of the worst health emergencies it could imagine -- an outbreak of avian flu on American soil. The exercise, which ended on Friday, was designed to simulate how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would marshal its resources, coordinate with other branches of government and, crucially, reassure the public while preparing it for a possible pandemic. "If we were at the beginning of a pandemic this...

Money game reveals our inner Robin Hood 18:00 11 April 2007 NewScientist.com news service Roxanne Khamsi Our innate desire for equality prompts us to "even out" the wealth of the rich among the poor – even at our own expense, a new study suggests. In the laboratory games, the poorest players surrendered some of their own money tokens simply to penalise their richer counterparts, without any hope of personal gain. James Fowler at the University of California in San Diego, US, and colleagues recruited 120 student volunteers to take part in the experiment. Each student sat before a computer terminal...

It begins suddenly: a flash, and they’re gone. Leaving behind just wisps of smoke and personal effects, the righteous are transported to heaven. The rest of us stay trapped on Earth, confused about our missing colleagues, friends, spouses and children, without whom we will enter a period of biblically foretold carnage called the Tribulation. So begins Left Behind: Eternal Forces, a game of interactive spiritual warfare, where the Rapture comes to your PC. It was inevitable, really. Left Behind, the 12-book series of eschatological potboilers by evangelical minister Tim LaHaye and former journalist Jerry Jenkins, has made a huge commercial...

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- We all know the new Nintendo Wii is the number one present to give this holiday season. You've heard the stories of those who camp out in front of stores the night before shipments come in, or those who pay double the cost on eBay. A massive shipment had just come in that morning and the line didn't look too unbearable, so I decided to wait and try...

Computer games are high on wish lists for teens this holiday season. However, some of those games could be hazardous to your computer and your privacy. The company that makes the game “Battlefield 2142” is Electronic Arts, a trailblazer in computerized entertainment. But EA is also blazing a different trail, using this particular game to reach into users’ computers. “It basically said they’re going to be using advertising and data on your computer,” said computer gamer Ryan Arp. Arp learned about the company’s use of spyware in the game after he opened the package, losing his right to return it....

New Christian-themed computer game encourages players to help nonbelievers 'see the light' Like the residents of southern Lebanon, computer gaming executives are used to living under fire. Whether the attackers are irate parents blaming American high school massacres on violent games or self-righteous politicians demanding that explicit sex scenes be removed, it seems that each day brings a new controversy. However, this time the computer game industry is facing a brand new opponent: The liberal and secular Left. At stake is a game called “Left Behind”, which is based on the Book of Revelation, or, more specifically, a popular series...

Christian apocalypse too violent, some say By DAVID CRARY - The Associated Press Targeted largely at conservative Christians, it's a violent video game with a difference: Combatants on one side pause for prayer, and their favored interjection is "Praise the Lord." Critics say Left Behind: Eternal Forces glorifies religious violence against non-Christians. Some liberal groups have been urging a boycott, and yesterday they urged Wal-Mart to withdraw the game from its shelves. However, Troy Lyndon, CEO of Left Behind Games Inc., defended the game as "inspirational entertainment" and said its critics were exaggerating. He expressed greater concern about poor reviews...

Play Be the Missile! It takes a lot of training to become a cruise missile. For example, most cruise missiles have to take classes in theoretical physics, astronomy, aeronautics, and accounting before they can graduate to become the lethal weapons we see on TV. But the most important part of their training is in avoiding obstacles at high speeds. And that's where you come in. Help the missiles fly through the tunnels and avoid the rotating barriers. You'll get five chances to fly all the way through all 9 levels. (I've made it about half-way through level 5.) Be the...

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Teens who play violent video games show increased activity in areas of the brain linked to emotional arousal and decreased responses in regions that govern self-control, a study released on Tuesday found. The study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to record tiny metabolic changes in brain activity in 44 adolescents who were asked to perform a series of tasks after playing either a violent or nonviolent video game for 30 minutes. The children, with no history of behavior problems, ranged in age from 13 to 17. Half played a T-rated first-person shooter game called "Medal of Honor:...

A Christian video game based on prophecies from the Bible's Book of Revelation takes a new twist on video game violence -- draining the "spirit" of characters who slay enemies rather than making them stronger. "Left Behind: Eternal Forces," which ships on Tuesday after about four years in the making, is a teen-rated PC strategy game based on the wildly popular "Left Behind" book series created by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. WAR can be funny. Amid the blood, the broken lives and fractured affairs of state there must, somewhere, sometimes, be reason to smile; the "if you didn't laugh you'd cry" axiom. Think about the war on terror. We have George W. Bush – a complete joke every time he opens his mouth without a teleprompter. We have nasty little men running around with tea-towels on their heads trying to blow up civilisation as we know it. We have fridge magnets exhorting us to be alert but not alarmed – and this sage counsel is nothing to do with the cold...

THE secret slaughter of at least 10,000 racing greyhounds by one man has been exposed by an undercover investigation. Last week The Sunday Times covertly filmed Smith on two consecutive days receiving greyhounds from trainers before killing them with a bolt gun, dumping them in the plot and covering over the “graves” using a mechanical digger....
