Memphis Girl Mauled by Pit Bull: Family Wants Dog Euthanized

Reported by: Kevin Holmes Email: kholmes@myeyewitnessnews.com Last Update: 7:58 pm

SHELBY COUNTY, TN – A Memphis child was mauled by a pit bull while inviting her friends to her birthday party. The 8-year-old girl is recovering at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, as authorities decide what should happen to the dog that attacked her.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies say the dog was chained to a tree in a front yard on Northdale Drive when it got loose.

Hailey King has undergone several surgeries to repair her hands, face, legs and shoulder. Late Saturday, April 10, 2010, she was unable to move one arm and her mother Eileen says she can barely move the other one.

Kim Shreve managed to help free Hailey from the dog.

“When I looked down in the cove," Shreve tells myEyewitnessNews.com, "there was a little girl and she was balled up in the fetal position and a large brown pit bull was on top of her and mauling her. She was covered in blood.”

After this attack, Eileen King wants the pit bull to be euthanized, but there’s a chance that won’t happen. Right now the one-year-old pit bull is under observation at the Memphis Animal Shelter.

If Shelby County Health officials consider the dog not to be vicious, it will be returned to its' owner. And that's an option that angers both Shreve and King.

“It’s not like you can tap the dog on the hands and tell it not to do it again," says Shreve. "The dog drew blood."

King agrees. “This is vicious," she says, "and that dog needs to be put to sleep.”

The dog’s owner, LeToya Redwing was cited for having a loose dog. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says this incident is still under investigation. Additional charges could follow.

If I run into an Islamocommunist hippo type, I’ll direct it back to Berkeley, where it most likely originated.

Pit bulls are American dogs that fight for honor and freedom. They will keep the Islamocommunist hippo types in quarantine. ;o]

I never trust animals, especially around young children. People who let their children around pit bulls are asking for trouble.

“Toddler Hitting Puppy

“Our 2 3/4 yr. old son has just started hitting our puppy and chasing and harrassing our cats (immitating the worst behaviours of the puppy). He is on his own initiative making the big change from diapers to potty, and I heard that some regression is to be expected due to that. I mentioned the hitting this morning to our daycare provider, and she said he and his 3 y.r old best friend (also a boy) have started hitting each other and her dog, as well as poking each other and the dog with sticks (yuck). Our son also recently went through a phase of calling us names like stupid and jerk. I personally find it easier to handle (ignore) the verbal assaults. I would really appreciate reading about how other parents have dealt with these problems.

We certainly do spend lots of time explaining to our son that the puppy (who weighs more than our son already) is our responsibility, that pets are to be taken care of and loved. We always stop him from hitting the pup and chasing the cats. We sometimes put him on timeout for his actions, and never hit him to discipline him. I am weary of having explained what is acceptable over and over without seeing any change in his behaviour. On name calling: we were told by other parents that using swearwords is mostly done to get a reaction, and so we handled the name calling in the way that was recommended for swearing. We told him that what he said was mean and could hurt peoples’ feelings and then we let it go. “

Are those shorts starched and ironed? That may be a clue to the mentality of the pit bull hater....

Dogs are loyal/obedient. They do what they are trained to do. If that means attacking intruders, they will do so, not knowing any better.

If you love a dog, and teach it to love and respond to love, they will never be aggressive. “Raise your kids like puppies and your puppies like kids, and you’ll never have any trouble with either.”

Agree with you on all points! Had 'kids' and have always dogs; and usually in multiples. You take good care of them; and they take good care of 'you'. Dogs, of coure, do not grow up to be teenagers. . .

Dogs DO become teenagers, but they disguise it well.
