Any dog can bite, and large dog can do damage. I cannot imagine the horror of your child being mauled by any animal.
Are you against ear cropping and schutzhund training?
“Punch it squarely in the tip of the nose then jamb your thumb into its eye socket. There is no animal that will continue biting if you jamb your thumb into its eye socket.”
Thanks for that very useful information. We have some folks around my neighborhood whose Rottys’ get loose every now and then.
My great uncle used to say it was caused by eating too much too green alfalfa(I think). He’d stick an ice pick in the cow’s belly to let the air out. you had to know exactly where to poke the hole. Stinky air and green goop would shoot out. Then the cow would get up and walk away.
I wouldn’t count on that working.
We have 2 English Mastiffs living next door to us. Their owners say they are gentle, I hope they are right.
English Mastiffs must be bigger, one of the EM’s next door weighs 200 lbs the other one 175.
The dogs next door are brindle but they are that big. I took some photographs of one of them and looking right at the camera it looks sort of like a gorilla.
Yeah sort of, but brindle not black!
English Mastiffs are completely gentle. They are protective: they won’t suffer any strange dogs or cats on their property (which they oddly know as if they made the survey themselves).
Their mass makes it so they don’t have to use their teeth. Anything coming up against one knows to turn around.
*Exceptions: pumas, coyotes and bobcats. They get run down.
Exactly. And my dog does not slobber, or even drool very much. Another reason is that the Anatolian is very hardy, few hereditary problems.
They can sure move fast when they want to...they look like big dumb clumsy goofy galoots, but they are as smart as a whip and super fast.
I never fear being alone at night. My mastiff is always alert, even when he’s snoring. Not a joke.
Makes you feel good doesn’t it. No one is going to sneak up on us night or day either. We have 3 Jack Russel Terriers and a Black Mouth Cur. The Jacks sleep in our bed and the Cur at the foot of our bed. They know when a car comes into the driveway or when someone steps up on the porch and they bark. Of course they know when there are squirrels in the bird feeder too.
I want to tell people who don’t have dogs that a SECURITY DOG sign out in front of their house will make a random burglar go on to another house. People just don’t want to mess with dogs, especially big ones.
Amazing, aren’t they? From protracted coma to quarterhorse bearing down on you at 30mph when you get home. I guess the fact they cover 10ft per gallop is how they get to you so fast.
Mine, Arthur, bucks like a horse, too, when greeting.
Wholeheartedly recommend the English, not so sure about the others. The Napolitanos worry me.
And I include the American in recommendation.
I have a rare strain, the Ashley-Greco line, who are 31 inches at the shoulders, much taller.
They are an outstanding dog. I cannot recommend them highly enough; the 6 yo neutered male American Mastiff shares the house with a 13 yo neutered female minpin, and a newly acquired intact 2 yo male Bichon. Of course the liveliest one is the Bichon. He belonged to my daughter, but when her husband got cancer, everyone was way too busy for the dog except me, and I ended up bonding with him. I stayed nights with them for a month, so my dogs were used to smelling him on me, and he fit right in to the household. He is, sadly, low dog on the totem pole but he accepts it in good humor.
As I type this, the mastiff is at my feet, licking the last few smears from a bowl of vanilla ice cream with fresh strawberries. There is no food he does not love, but he gets bad gas from some veggies, and he doesn’t get chocolate or grapes.
