SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) ― The owner of a pit bull that bit off part of a Sheboygan boy's cheek has been fined $177.

Police records released Monday show that 52-year-old Thomas J. Schmitz was cited over the weekend for owner liability for a dog causing injury. A telephone listing for Schmitz was disconnected. Police say a 12-year-old girl was walking the dog on a leash Tuesday when it attacked the 8-year-old boy.

The fine is the key in the civil suit to be filed later against the owner. Having a LEO agency issue a citation gives weight to a lawsuit.

Agreed. A while ago I while walking my 40# Brittany mix we came across a 12 YO boy walking a medium sized springer. As we passed the springer lunged at my dog and dragged the kid about 10 ft before he was stopped.

Springers are strong. That breed of dog dragged my then 9 year old daughter when she was walking it at the shelter. The dog was an escape artist and took awhile for the staff to corral after my daughter dropped the lease.
