Shovel Stops Pit Bull Attack: Update

Published Date: 2010/4/26 12:34:34 Article ID : 7748 Version 1.00.02 By Keven Drews

UCLUELET — A 27-year-old Ucluelet man says he was forced to knock out a pit bull with a shovel Saturday night in order to stop an attack on a family pet being walked by two children.

Jesse Stenbaugh told the Westcoaster.ca Monday he heard children’s screams of “help, help,” while walking home from a friend’s house near the trailer park on Cynamoka Road at about 8 p.m.

When he ran across the street and arrived on scene, Stenbaugh said he saw the pit bull shaking a golden Labrador retriever – about eight month’s old – by the neck.

“I just saw this dog shaking this other dog,” he said.

A man in a truck arrived on scene, as well.

Stenbaugh said he grabbed a shovel from the truck and tried to stop the attack by shoving the handle up the pit bull’s anus and by prying open its jaws.

Neither attempt worked.

Stenbaugh said he then wound up and smashed the dog on its head several times, knocking it out.

“The dog was trying to kill the little kids’ dog, so I hit it on the head with a shovel and knocked it out and stopped the fight right there.”

Stenbaugh said he didn’t see the pit bull’s owners around, doesn’t know the children, although he suspects they were about eight and 12 years old, and he doesn’t know the man in the truck.

He said the Labrador was in rough shape.

Shortly after knocking out the animal, members of the Ucluelet RCMP arrived, said Stenbaugh.

Const. Ryan Warren, of the Ucluelet RCMP, called the incident a “full on, vicious attack.”

He said the smaller dog suffered puncture wounds, was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to survive.

He said the attack was so vicious it came in as a cougar attack.

Warren said the pit bull was taken to Port Alberni. The animal’s fate is not known.

The Port Alberni SPCA office is closed Monday.

Being hoisted _up and thrown off_ balance....

*sigh*

Never post after your 90 pound Dobe wakes you up, snarling and barking at something he hears outside...and then jumps on your chest in his desire to make *sure* you know there’s something outside.

One less pit bull in the world today, a great way to start off my day, thank you for posting this. A good pitbull is a dead pitbull.

Look, I’m trying to get helpful information out there, based on my personal experience and the experiences of other pit bull owners.

It is not helpful to advise someone to grab an attacking pit bull by the hind legs. That advise will get someone killed. The only way to deal with an attacking pit bull is with excessive deadly force.

Grabbing a pit bull by the legs is only a means to save the pit bull and that should not even be a consideration if a pit bull is attacking. It should be killed without question. If one so much as walks in my direction and is off its leash, it will be laying in the street dead.

Well, you go ahead and just unload into a dog, surrounded by a crowd of people, while it’s still got somebody’s arm/leg/child in it’s mouth, and possibly under it’s body.
Let me know how that works out for you, Rambo.

Go ahead, resort to snide uniformed insult. I have a CCW permit and the training that goes with it. I have over 40 years handling weapons, many of those as an expert marksman. I am trained to know when to pull the trigger and have the accuracy to put the round where it needs to be.

I don't mean to be harsh with you but your sillyness on here is what is dangerous. I'm sorry if you are embarrassed because someone pointed out that your bad advise puts people's lives at risk but it needed to be corrected.

While my reply was certainly, unabashedly snide, it was not an insult. If you have the expertise you claim, explain to me how you're going to prevent the bullet from ricocheting inside the dog, or passing right through it's body, hitting the dog's victim or someone standing nearby? Wouldn't you rather someone like me seperate the dog from it's target so you could get a good clean shot?

I don't mean to be harsh with you blah blah blah patronistic/condescending/blowhard blah blah blah.

*SNERK*
