Robin Hood has been with us, in song and legend, for almost 1,000 years, although only in the past few decades has he been portrayed as wearing tights, and only since the advent of talking pictures could someone like Kevin Costner play him as a sort of landlocked medieval surfer with a bow and arrow.
Robin himself isn't around to complain. Indeed, he probably never really existed: There is speculation that the character is based on a 13th-century Sherwood Forest thief named Roger Godberd, or the real-life Earl of Huntington, but he probably started as a balladeer's myth and just picked up speed along the way.
Various characters and Merry Men were grafted on — the idea of Maid Marian, for instance, as a damsel in need of rescue from an evil knight, probably came from a 1260 French play — and over the years, Robin was given new responsibilities: He became a Saxon fighting the Norman overlords, and he was raising money to free Richard the Lionheart, the 12th-century king who had gone off on the Crusades and got himself captured.
