U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam released the following Warden Message on May 18, 2010:

On Sunday, May 16, 2010, at 8:30 in the evening a teenage boy ran past embassy guards and threw a bottle with flammable liquid under a water truck parked outside the walls of the embassy compound. Embassy guards immediately captured the boy and turned him over to the policeman on duty at the embassy. The boy had a note on him threatening possible future attacks. He told police he was motivated to attack the United States embassy by violent extremist ideology. The police are investigating this attack.

The Embassy Regional Security Office is following the investigation closely to determine if this was an isolated event or is a continuing threat. We have ensured that all proper security measures are in place.

In the meantime, we ask that you please review your personal security measures to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep yourself and your family safe. This includes:

· Locking the grills on your doors and securing your safe haven at night. · Locking your doors and keeping your windows closed while driving. · Remain aware of your surroundings and people who seem to be giving you an undue amount of attention.

So much for being a “Haven of Peace”. Only two times I was ever there was in 1994. First trip was to pick up some food for the Rwanda famine relief. Second time we picked some shiny new white Nissan Patrol SUVs and delivered them to Kigali, Rwanda for the UN. You'd think there would have been a surplus of available vehicles, since 1,000,000 Rwandans had just been killed.

It would have been interesting to do the tourist thing for a day or two, but we never left the airport environment. Just picked up our cargo with the help of a Canadian logistics contingent based there and went back to our hotel in Uganda that night, after dropping the cargo off.
