Optics for an AR
5/22/2010 | Self

Posted on 05/22/2010 8:26:48 AM PDT by Blood of Tyrants

I am looking for a holographic sight for my flattop AR. I have looked at the Aimpoint and the EOTech sights and everyone says they are the cream of the crop. Problem is that $500 for a holo sight is a bit much. Can anyone suggest a rugged, reliable, good quality holo sight for a decent price?

A lot of folks switch optics all the time as their needs evolove or their preferences change. So a lot of good used optics are on the market. You can get an Aimpoint for around $300 used on gun selling sites. Or you can try some of the mostly Chinese “Brand X” stuff in the 100-200 dollar range. Some of them are pretty good, I’m told. I’d steer clear of the 50-100 dollar stuff on CheaperThanDirt etc.

I have an aimpoint, but I’d check the other less expensive stuff on the various forums that do gun reviews.

I understand Bushnell is about to come out with one similar to the EoTech but closer to $300. Keep an eye on eBay. I’ve seen some good values on the EoTechs there.

Yea, I have pretty much determined that the stuff from China is crap.

I have Aimpoints and others, but I’ve found the Bushnell Holosight XLP to be very good and a whole lot cheaper.

I see several different models of EOTech. Which is better for an AR ti be used at 100 yards or less?

Not available at Midway. Typical.

This will be a fun thread.

If you look around, you can pick up an EOTech for $350. And if you like the EOTech, then go with it. I got a 551 for $300 a couple of years back, and I found myself surprised at how much I grew to like it over time. The newer models have made it a lot easier to turn them on/off & adjust the reticle intensity.

I also managed to bash it really good once, and it didn't bother it a bit. That's where the cheaper sights will often let you down.

Of course, if you really want best of breed, though, the ACOG is the way to go. $;-)

You can find these at several outlets. Optics Planet is a good site for browsing optics.

Actually, you bring up a good point. Is there a good ACOG-type sight for the AR? I used an ACOG in Iraq and loved it, but I just can’t justify the price. Anyone know any good alternatives?

At under a hundred yards, NOTHING is faster on target than an EOTech with its “bullseye” reticle. Yet it’s also very accurate out further with its 1 MOA center dot.

Aimpoints need a much bigger center dot, like around 3 MOA, since they have no ring around the dot.

OTOH, it’s hard not to like an Aimpoint, with a battery draw that will last for years “on.”

If that matters, since EOTechs turn themselves off after a few hours if you forget.

I don’t spend more on optics than on the guns under them!

But an ACOG is “best of breed.”

The Bushnell holosight is basically an EOTech, without the milspec armoring etc.

There are lots of ACOG wannabee clones for sale at Cheaperthandirt etc. in the 150 dollar range. Chinese, IOW.

Not sure how rugged they are.
