Optics for an AR
5/22/2010 | Self

Posted on 05/22/2010 8:26:48 AM PDT by Blood of Tyrants

I am looking for a holographic sight for my flattop AR. I have looked at the Aimpoint and the EOTech sights and everyone says they are the cream of the crop. Problem is that $500 for a holo sight is a bit much. Can anyone suggest a rugged, reliable, good quality holo sight for a decent price?

I always liked the iron sights on the AR-15. I had a Colt scope on my first AR-15, but there was a tiny bit of play between the upper and lower. Not noticeable except it seemed less accurate with the scope than without it.

Someone made a wedge to keep them tight. I never tried it and it seems that today that is not a problem. Still I think I would prefer the iron sights, that is if I had one now.

My EOTech doesn’t have the night vision settings, and it runs on AAs instead of C123s. I can’t remember it’s product number.

Sorry, with sights, money equals quality--for the most part. It's going to cost you $200-300 to get a good sight whether it is one of the electronic wonders, or just a good lensed scope.

If you're going to be going anywhere but fantasy land with your rifle, I wouldn't waste my money on the cheap stuff . . . been there done that and the ones I've tried ain't worth wasting money on.

I bought two of the cheap red dot sights from CDNN. They were Simmons and were only $9.95 on clearance.

Now I have them mounted on a Weirauch air rifle and a good quality Daisy pump up pellet rifle. They actually seem pretty decent for what I am using them for.

Now I would not trust my life to them, but they seem a great buy. The brightness is controllable.

There seems to have been a real technological leap in optical sights in the last 10 years. I suspect most of the cost is making them tough enough for combat use.

NOthing wrong with iron. Worked for marksmen ever since firearms were invented. In many cases, I find that I shoot better with iron sights . . . although the newer electronic wonders appear to be much quicker on target . . . just put the dot on target and pull the trigger.

Last year I bought a Bushnell optic that looks very similar to the ACOG, and performs more than good enough for what I use it for. I also like the iron sights that are on top of it. They aren’t perfect irons, but plenty good enough in the event of an optics failure.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019SS8CE/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0000A0AIS&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1M5HJ1MB7CQZ55XRZ69A

I paid $150 for mine. It was a breeze to sight in, and has been very reliable for me over the year that I’ve owned it. If you get one, just remember to turn the damn thing off when you’re done using it. lol

The batteries for it are ‘common’ and inexpensive, by the way.

One other thing about the EOTech (and the Aimpoint and other red dot sights): I have found that, outdoors in very bright sunlight, you can lose the reticle even if it's on full. I was surprised to discover this, but living in Florida made this apparent very quickly.

The reticle of an ACOG switches its contrast in real-time to always be visible against whatever the background is. It's always there.

Just my own observation, but I note that in theaters such as Iraq, the guys with the EOTechs and Aimpoints are in the urban/suburban areas, and the guys with ACOGs are out in the open field. Perhaps this is the reason.

Keep an eye on eBay. I’ve seen some good values on the EoTechs there.

I'd just add, caveat emptor to that. I read somewhere....maybe ARFCOM that there are some counterfeits out there. Just be careful. There are definately deals to be had out there if you look. Just don't get ripped off.

“EOTechs turn themselves off after a few hours”

That’s the problem. At oh dark thirty I want that sight already on when i grab a rifle, not fiddling around with one more distraction.

Real good time to take a deep breath and decide on a course of action. Chill...rifle in hand...sight on....if you can't do these things in the dark, you've got a problem.

Travis, you probably have the EOTech Mdl 512...I have the same one...great HWS. Note to Blood of Tyrants: In addition to the EOTech the C-More sights are also quite good and cost less than the EOTechs.

One thing to keep in mind however with regards to Red Dot or Holo sites is how old your eyes are. I’ve found that if your hauling middle-aged eyes around in your head and things are a bit blurry these days, regardless of whether you whether contact lens or glasses you may still have some bluriness on the red dot or the HWS reticles.

You might want to find a friend (or go to an indoor range where you can rent AR’s, etc), and try the different sights out before you spend a lot of money on one.

I’m an FFL and have mounted a number of optics. My advise is to try a bunch out before investing and see which one works best given your particular eyesight, shooting platform and shooting needs).

Do you have the NVG-compatible EOTech? If so, what NVG?

Let’s piggyback the What NVG / NV Optic? question onto this thread.

OK, I know it is not an AR and also know it is not an expensive sight but for knocking around the back yard and surroundings it is about perfect. I keep a small caliber but accurate auto in my pocket but nearly every time, this or a similar gun is all that is needed to quickly shoot a rat, cottonmouth etc. It keeps your reflexes and shooting eye in practice. I just walked out in the back yard and took this pic. From a rest and using H&N match pellets, it will keep everything in one large hole at maybe 50 feet. Photobucket

That is what I have on my M-4gery.
