Optics for an AR
5/22/2010 | Self

Posted on 05/22/2010 8:26:48 AM PDT by Blood of Tyrants

I am looking for a holographic sight for my flattop AR. I have looked at the Aimpoint and the EOTech sights and everyone says they are the cream of the crop. Problem is that $500 for a holo sight is a bit much. Can anyone suggest a rugged, reliable, good quality holo sight for a decent price?

Been hearing of such here too...... no hands on just word of mouth per se . Trijicon has come up with a really small thermal sight that is really good for the range of the M4. Uncooled so that makes me wonder if it will last etc.....

I like minimal gadgets on a primary weapon. Sounds like yer buddy is on his game if his tools are working for him.

If ya can share the make and model of the green laser he’s using I would be grateful. I would like to try it !

Stay Safe !

Too bad they still won’t release the IR lasers for sale here. I will have to try out the green.

IMHO the Eotech is a great holoscope, but you pay a ton of money for its low infrared signature, which isn’t that applicable to daily sporting use

Optics are starting to get really advanced. I think they have a scope now which automatically finds the range then adjusts the reticule.

I still think good quality iron sights are hard to beat. The best I have ever had was mounted on an old Krag. It was a Redfield receiver with a fairly large aperture. The front was a sourdough. That flat gold front really stood out plus the whole thing was pretty durable.

The most successful rifleman I have ever read about was a guy from Finland. I was surprised to note he used only iron sights even for long range sniping.

Of course if he had some of the modern optics available today, maybe he would have used them instead.

"I like the irons."

One of the best defense rifles I ever owned was an HK 91. The trigger pull sucked but I got used to it. I never used anything but the diopter sight that it came with. Good hits out to 400 meters. I sold it some time back and have been kicking my ass on that decision ever since.

The question is cost. The AR 15 is good to 600 yards at best. Why pay for a sight that costs more than the rifle?

I wouldn’t be down on cheaperthandirt or any of the stuff they carry. I’ve had nothing but good luck with their goodies. The Barska scopes are pretty good believe it or not. I have the 6-24x40 on an H&R Bullbarrel .223 and shooting off sandbags it will blow the neck off a (empty) Budlite at 300yds consistently. Big time family entertainment for minimal investment.

My dad gave me the Holosight. I believe h paid about $250 a few years ago at Sportsman Warehouse. I’m guessing they can be had at several places for $200 or under now.

I like the reticle...... large ring with small dot in middle. Big ring for superfast aquisition, dot for fine work.

The main problem I have with Cheaper than Dirt is they are not that cheap. CDNN is always lower on the few things they might have in common. They often have some great deals on magazines. The best thing is their mags are almost always original manufacturer or name brand. I bought several Mecgar and Argentine military mags for the Browning HP and they were low in price and fine quality. I mean really good.

"... Huh? The EOTech center dot covers 1MOA, compared to 3 in an Aimpoint. Without the EOTech's cirle around it, the Aimpoint needs a bigger dot to "find" it fast."

The *center* dot in an EOTech is 1moa, but the surrounding circle bleeds into the center dot at cranked up brightness, which most people will find out is the only real all-around usable setting.

When set this way in daylight, you're looking at one big red splotch.

I'd rather have one single red or green pencil-point dot in the middle of my view, rather than something that looks like the automatic lead reticle from an F-4 Phantom jet's aerial gunsight like the EOTech I bought has.

Comparing my ACOG's simple and unobtrusive inverted red chevron to my big splotchy EOTech's reticle, my opinion is that I can get on target much faster with the ACOG even at the reduced field of view at 4x magnification.

The older my eyes get, the more I like aperture type sights like the AR has. My bolt rifles are scoped for sure, but I expect to shoot them far away.

I put the EOTech on my shorty for low light and close conditions to defend hearth and home. My Colt AR has no add ons, less stuff to fail for planned expedition.
