Dog survives greyhound attack...in a dog walk park (in Australia)

UTE little Finn is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by two greyhounds at an off-leash dog park at Thornleigh last week.

It is the second attack at the Dawson Ave park in a fortnight. In the other incident, a dog, believed to be a poodle, died after being attacked by a labrador.

Two-year-old Finn required surgery and about 24 stitches after being attacked about 9.15am on Mother’s Day.

“Two greyhounds ran down from the other end (of the park) and went straight for him and started chewing him,” Finn’s owner, Richard Bamber, said.

He separated the dogs but when one of the greyhounds turned on him he jumped over the fence holding Finn.

“It (the greyhound) got very close to taking the back of my ankle off,” Mr Bamber said. The two owners who were at the other end (of the park) came over and they proceeded to say that I should have checked with them before letting my dog off the leash in the dog park.”

The off-leash area was one of five provided by Hornsby Council, which was investigating the incident, a spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said greyhounds were required to be muzzled at all times when away from the property on which they were ordinarily kept.

Greyhounds and Lurchers (mix of greyhound/sighthound and other breeds) are notorious in the UK for being vicious. Of course, the reputation is undeserved and has everything to do with the owners.

Greyhounds are more aggressive than the local city buses. But school buses attack more kids.

Track rescue greyhounds were very dangerous to the small pets of some of our clients when I was working in an animal clinic. The greyhounds were fine with the humans, but they could be quite vicious to each other; usually they had to be muzzled in case smaller animals hove into view. One racing female came in with her huge muscled haunches full of teeth marks from her kennel mates.

Lots of owners of greyhounds here in Florida. They are adopted when they retire them from racing. The ones I've seen are very docile. They are pretty much couch potatoes!!

PetSmart has greyhound adoption day & there are usually 10 to 15 greyhound owners that bring their dogs for a gathering. The dogs all seem to get along fine with other dogs & people.

So cute!! The dogs wear bandanas & are very friendly & like to be petted. Some owners own two or more. We have quite a few greyhounds that are walked through our neighborhood. I have never seen a muzzled greyhound.

The dogs are trained to chase the rabbit at the track, so small dogs would be like prey to them - especially one that is running.

I never take dogs to parks, let alone dog parks. That’s why they never contract communicable dog diseases or acquire parasites.

Smart move. I would never take my dog to a park even if one was available...It only takes one dumb dog and owner to get the whole park upset..

I agree. Dog parks are a bad idea. It’s so much better to get together with other responsible owners and have doggie playdates. That way you don’t have a whole pack of dogs to compete with if something does happen (dogs will be dogs), and you know your dog won’t catch anything if the other owners are vaccinating like you are.
