"Red Dawn" Remake Irks Beijing

An MGM remake of the 1984 film "Red Dawn" - this time, with the Chinese and the Russians as the enemies - has drawn sharp criticism from one of the leading Chinese state-run newspapers two days in a row.

"U.S. reshoots Cold War movie to demonize China" and "American movie plants hostile seeds against China," read the Monday and Tuesday editorials in the Beijing-based Global Times, whose daily circulation, in Chinese and English editions,is about 1.5 million.

Coming on the heels of secretary of state Hilary Clinton's China visit, the commentaries said the $42 million film, directed by Dan Bradley and starring Connor Cruise (son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman),"is deeply rooted in Americans' fear of China's rise."

"Despite the world's focus on U.S.-China relations in the strategic and economic dialogue and their increasing economic connections, China can still feel U.S. distrust and fear, especially among its people. Americans' suspicions about China are the best ground for the hawks to disseminate fear and doubt, which is the biggest concern with the movie 'Red Dawn,'" one commentary said.

Excerpts of the new "Red Dawn" script, by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore, leaked last weekend on the Web site The Awl. The excerpts appear to reflect a story in which China's People's Liberation Army -- led by Korean-American actor Will Yun Lee as the chief baddie, Captain Lo -- invade the U.S., with a group of resisters fighting back.

Posters online for the film, which MGM plans to release in November, show a cracked red, white and blue U.S. map stamped with the PLA star and the slogan "Rebuilding Your Reputation," according to The Awl.

MGM spokesman Grey Munford said the posters were made by fans, not by the filmmakers. "There isn't a one-sheet for the film at this time," he said.

“Do the kids in the remake fight the invaders with their iPods and Twitter?”

There’s some kids at my rifle club that could make a pretty good showing I think.

Remember the promo for the original “Red Dawn”, with Soviet soldiers lined up underneath a MacDonald’s sign?

The producers had to use the Chinese PLA this time - what other army on earth is up to the task of invading the U.S.?

Will the latest RD have such memorable lines as,

“Boys, avenge me!! Avenge meeeeeee!!!!!”

BTW, do the Chicoms actually believe that when the dragon growls, we are supposed to listen?

Who gets to play the part of the Mayor from the first movie who colludes with the enemy once they take over? Could be a good role for Barry, the Manchurian Candidate....

They also filmed a portion of the movie in down-town Detroit. In one of the climactic scenes, they blew up a large building down there.

It caused 3 million dollars in improvement.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

The moans of protest might be even louder, but having the occupying forces be a mixed bag of nationalities in blue UN helmets under the UN flag would have made much better (and more relevant) sense. Portraying a Nancy Pelosi look alike as the quisling president of a “reorganized” USA would also strike a little to close to home for some but could lead to the satisfying final scene of Faux Nancy dangling from a well watered tree.

I remember seeing the original Red Dawn in a little theater in Edgartown on Martha’s Vinyard.

I was whooping it up while the rest of the meager audience sat in stunned silence. Good times.

Charlie Sheen was in Red Dawn. The guy’s been around forever.

Well, if it’s true that part takes place in Detroit the kids have got the guns already — the gang members at least do. I imagine some of those gang bangers would be the bane of an invading armies existence, really. Would be pretty wild to see the Anarchists, Gang Bangers, The Patriots, Hunters, Police AND the US Military acting TOGETHER to repel invaders...

I honestly do believe if push came to shove they would meet with fierce resistance — of a kind they’ve never even imagined from their oppressed peoples...

A visible violent invasion would definitely make for some strange bedfellows here in the US... I think China and Russia (in real life) should take note though.

NOTE TO BEIJING — I KNOW this is a MOVIE. I’m just stating some facts in case YOU get any ideas from this movie... Remember what Hirohito said...

The Russians are sure to also have a fit about this, similar to how they had a fit about MW2 and World in Conflict, and the original Red Dawn in 1984.

This thing was supposed to be released in November.

Now, its release has be indefinitely postponed due to "financial problems."

Too bad. I was looking forward to this movie.
