I’ve lived overseas (Panama, Europe). I’ve spent almost twenty years of my life in Europe. At the end of the day....as the sun sets....you basically realize the fundamental values of the US, the cost of living, and the ability to do what you desire outweigh any other country.

People will comment on the unsafe nature of Washington DC, Houston, Miami....in comparison with Stuttgart, London, and Copenhagen. I can drive 100 miles outside of each of the three American cities mentioned...and it’s just as safe as the European places mentioned.

If you’ve never been to Denmark...try going and buying a bottle of Jack Daniels. For what you pay in Denmark....you can buy three bottles of Jacky D’s in Davenport, Iowa. Try buying a car in Germany....and realizing the nineteen percent VAT is already in the price.

For every advantage that some guy wants to make of any place in Europe...I can pretty much win the argument against them. I will admit that a days drive on the Ring-of-Fire in Ireland lowers my blood pressure by ten percent. I will admit that beer of Germany can’t be equaled. But those are of a singular type value.

We have a number of FReepers who live outside the US, either as natives of other countries or Americans living abroad. Those who choose to live outside the US have reasons for doing so, of course - work, missions, a foreign spouse - and find advantages in the place they live. However, nobody has made a case for any other country’s being superior, overall, to the US.

"the price"

My Brit in-laws live pretty good, but practically everything costs twice what it does in the States. One Brit bro-in-law wanted to take up flying after a recent visit to our home here in Wisconsin. We live next to a private airport, so my bro-in-law chatted up a lot of the neighbors and persuaded them to give him a ride. When he went back to Britain, he almost persuaded his wife to move to America so he could learn to fly. The cost of flying lessons in Britain was too prohibitive. The upshot was they didn't move here, and they have a very nice life in England. But it does cost a lot more to live there...even with the "free" healthcare.
