Officials: School secretary brutally attacked by pit bull

By DEEPA BHARATH

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

GARDEN GROVE – A long-time school secretary at Woodbury Elementary had to undergo emergency surgery Tuesday afternoon for a punctured artery after a pit bull wandered into the school office and brutally attacked her, school officials said.

The incident occurred about 3 p.m. when school was out and there were still about 200 children in the Boys and Girls Club's after-school program, said Alan Trudell, spokesman for the Garden Grove Unified School District.

"The dog followed a parent into the office," he said. The dog owner lives close to the school and told officials that his dog appears to have gotten out of the house because one of the children may have left a door open, Trudell said. The dog owner's child used to attend Woodbury Elementary, he said.

The employee was identified as 65-year-old Marilyn Reyes by her daughter, Denise Orcher. Orcher said her mother tried to get the dog out of the office when it turned around and bit her in the arm and leg.

The bite punctured an artery in Reyes' arm, sending blood squirting up to the ceiling and all over her work desk, Orcher said.

Amish school shooting

The Amish school shooting was a gun attack at the West Nickel Mines School, an Amish one-room schoolhouse in the Old Order Amish community of Nickel Mines, a village in Bart Township of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on October 2, 2006. Gunman Charles Carl Roberts IV took hostages and eventually shot and killed five girls (aged 6–13) before committing suicide in the schoolhouse

I have a pit bull and I have several friends that have pit bulls. My dog and my friends dogs are great animals. They are all full grown and I have never witnessed any aggression from any of them. They bark at strangers, but almost all dogs do that. Once she gets used to a stranger she loves them. It’s NOT the breed.

“Rare” Pit Bull atack of the day.

Though I’m sure she provoked the poor, sweet, widdle, Pit Bull (/extreme sarcasm), I really admire the victim’s attitude. She sounds like a wonderful lady.

“She’s doing OK emotionally I guess,” she said. “She just feels grateful that the dog got her and not one of the kids. If the dog had gotten hold of a child, it could’ve been fatal.”

You are right, it is not the breed, I have been around some really nice PB’s.....in fact one followed my dog and I home one night.....she was so sweet....I think she escaped from her owners.....

I used to live in a neighborhood where there was a real nasty Labrador retriever.....he bit a couple people

Stray dogs make me nervous....

“Well, maybe all the maulings are just coincidences.”<<<<<<

Nope. Their attacks are an extremely small percentage of the 13 thousand attacks happening daily in this country, however. Over two thousand attacks require hospitalization every day, yet for some reason, we only ever hear about the two or three caused by pit bulls. It’s been said before by one of the less dishonest reporters that attacks by other breeds simply aren’t newsworthy.

There are an estimated 10 million pit bulls in this country, out of 76 million dogs total. Over half of all dogs are small breeds, which implies that pit bull-type dogs are the majority of medium to large breed dogs. In some areas, the labrador is still number one, but in most large cities, the pit bull will be the most common dog seen running the streets or chained up. That is also not a coincidence, and is evidenced by the fact that the CDC, AVMA, HSUS, and pretty much every other expert involved in the field report that irresponsible ownership is the leading cause of dog attacks from all breeds.

Most people tend to accept that the dogs are inherently vicious or unpredictable without knowing anything other than what the media tells them. I am not one of these. Years ago, I was asked to prove to my friend that his pit bulls were vicious (at the time, I too hated the breed), and for all my research, I didn’t find one bit of evidence from a reputable source that supported my claims. So I changed my mind and admitted I was mistaken, and here we are.

“Though I’m sure she provoked the poor, sweet, widdle, Pit Bull (/extreme sarcasm), “<<<<<<<<<<

The dog was running loose in a strange place, being approached by someone that it didn’t know. The story says the woman tried to move the dog. It didn’t just run up to her and attack. She initiated contact with a strange dog. However, regardless of the situation, I still believe this particular dog should be euthanized, simply because it did bite her, but I don’t attribute this or any other reported bite to a breed of dog’s temperament, because even without pit bulls, there are still thousands of dog bites every day in this country, and many of those require a hospital visit. Not to mention that even the smallest dogs can and do take lives, so the argument about strength or the mythical locking jaw is moot. Until people can see that their irresponsible actions are what causes these incidents (which by the way is what the experts say unanimously), we will continue to see stories like this one. People need to start stepping up and taking responsibility for their pets, and stop blaming a dog that is no better/worse than its owner.
