I couldn’t fail to notice that among the aspirations of the Obama scholars, mathematician, engineer and physicist did not come up.

I guess there’s little harm in trying to motivate kids, better they should believe in themselves. But do they expect to get by on affirmative action or by dint of real effort? I wonder how many of them are going to go home and try do their math homework. (My guess: 0).

Time was that anyone who proclaimed themselves a "scholar" was bragging that he could actually read, more or less.

Seems like to claim the title of "Obama Scholar" is to admit that you don't know what, or where, or who, but you are convinced of the why.

Aside from not appreciating scholarship for its own merits, what proof do they have of his scholarship? He has very little acquaintance with either history, geography or mathematics and even less respect for what facts he does know.

Technical competency requires real work. You have to actually learn math beyond long division, and apply it to problems to find real solutions! This is not the same thing as BSing one's way through Obama Studies. Obama Scholars, like their idol, will declare themselves intellectual overachievers while providing no evidence of such.

While I see nothing wrong with giving the kids a goal and something to strive for, the question begs..

Are there any white Obama scholars?
Is an Obama Scholar an automatic candidate to be a Rhodes Scholar?

I mean if Bill Gates were to set up a Gates Scholar program and all that were ‘in it’ were 30 white students I would imagine there would be some ‘hell’ to pay???

Nor, indeed, soldier, sailor, marine, or airman.

I noticed that, with the exception firefighter and, arguably, lawyer, nothing that required a lot of real physical or mental rigor and discipline came up in the list. Why was business owner not in the list? Why was farmer not in the list? Right, right, those jobs take work. You can plumb us by our language; easy to tell what these urbanites consider worthwhile.

Indoctrinating these highly-impressionable children into the Obama group-think with its pseudo-religious mantra is damaging. I'm sure these kids will soon be issued uniforms and funny hats to help "unify" them and help them to "identify" with one another. Or to identify those who are not one of them.
