Methodists 'live more than seven years longer than rest of population'

Men belonging to the famously clean-living denomination live to the ripe old age of 83.9, research has found, compared with a national average of 77. For women the difference in longevity was even greater with female Methodists dying at 91.1 on average – nine years longer than the 82 years enjoyed by most British women.

Last week Stanley Lucas died in Cornwall aged 110, having become not just the oldest male member of the Methodist Church but the oldest man in Europe. Dr Richard Vautrey, vice president of the Methodist Conference, said, “I’m sure there are many different factors at work for Methodists to attain these numbers. “But I would guess that our emphasis on caring for our spiritual as well as physical health, avoiding excess, engaging with people in our communities and being good neighbours all help.”

Methodism, an evangelical Christian movement that split from the Church of England at the end of the 18th century, is known for its focus on social justice and for many years was at the forefront of the temperance movement that preached “total abstinence” from alcohol. The increased life expectancy of its followers, who now number 265,000 in Britain, was calculated by researchers working for British Religion in Numbers, based at the University of Manchester...

This is from England. If they sampled America, methodists would come in second, at best.

Methodists abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and gambling. If only they would abstain from abortion!

Aren’t there two kinds of ‘social justice’? The Jesus kind where neighbor takes care of neighbor voluntarily .. and the other being the progressive socialist/communist kind where government mandates care of everyone thus enslaving them. I’d ask the Methodist Church which one they’re for.

I’m for charity and not the government brand.

Guess I’m an old school methodist.

Isn’t it the Japanese who live the longest? They’re clean-freaks too.

LOL! That’s tragically ironic. Those who survive pregnancy live the longest.

Men belonging to the famously clean-living denomination...

Hasn't the Methodist Church pretty much gone atheist in recent years as have most other formerly Christian denominations in the West?

I can accept that the typical Methodist was clean living 50 years ago but not today.

“Methodists abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and gambling. If only they would abstain from abortion!”

And I would add - abstain from collaborating with Castro and Clinton to return Elian Gonzalez back to communist Cuba.
Some commie-international Methodist group helped sponsor Elian’s Cuban grandmothers ( who for some reason had to inspect his penis - I am not making this up ) who came to Florida to try to take Elian back.
There are quite a few meddling “Progressive” Methodists that I wish a shortened life for.

Lying with statistics.

Of course a population that has virtually no young members will have a higher average age at death.

That’s just dumb.

Lying with statistics.

I've recently coined a phrase which you'll probably appreciate, if not outright agree with:

Statistics is just numerology dressed up in a 21st century dinner jacket.

Statistics doesn't supply facts, it hides information in a fog of conjured data.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.
