Bizarre New Details Released in Nederland Kidnapping ( Levying War Against the U.S)

Bizarre new details have been released about a homeless man accused abducting a couple in Nederland on Saturday.

Joseph Carter, age 42, appeared in court at the Boulder County Jail for the first time Tuesday.

While the judge was advising Carter of the charges against him, Carter said, "You're also going to have to add that to levying war against the U.S.!" His defense attorney quickly told him to shut up.

A Probable Cause Arrest Affidavit also reveals what his alleged victims went through Saturday.

It said that Christopher Clifford, age 44, or Berthoud and Diana Frank-Delgado, age32, of Ft. Collins had been hiking along Como Creek when they sat down along the river. A man wearing camouflage approached them and allegedly threatened to kill Clifford, pointing a rifle at him. Clifford was then handcuffed to a tree.

The affidavit states that after securing Clifford, Frank-Delgado was tied to a tree using a piece of chain the suspect had around his neck. Then, the affidavit says, Carter put a piece of duct tape over Frank-Delgado's mouth and told her he'd forgotten to gag Clifford.

Carter said he was leaving to get a gag for Clifford. When he returned, the affidavit says, he told Frank-Delgado that "he had not put the handcuffs on tight enough because Clifford was gone." He then proceeded to let her go, stating that he was going to kill himself.

Frank-Delgado left, but heard a single gunshot shortly after she was released. She made it back to the car, where a deputy found her waiting.

"Once it got out in media, we got all kinds of calls about people who'd run across him over this two-week period," said Cmdr. Rick Brough with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Longmont Police said they've also dealt with Carter before when he allegedly threatened to kill a co-worker while dressed in a chainmail hood and body armor.

Two days after the abduction, deputies came across Carter walking along Highway 72. They convinced Carter to take him to his camp, where they found clothing and chains matching descriptions of the suspect as well as a SKS rifle hidden by a log.

The victims said Carter made negative comments about Obama being President and that he was in a militia group.

Carter will be formally charged July 1st. He faces two counts each of second-degree kidnapping, felony menacing and false imprisonment. A judge did not allow him to bond out of jail.

Two points should be made here. One, Boulder is a strange and nutty place. Two, people who are too strange and nutty for Boulder often end up in Nederland.

Nederland is a cute little town, but a little ... wacky. But how can you not smile at a town that celebrates Frozen Dead Guy Days?

I’m smiling, definitely. Just driving through Nederland is pretty good entertainment.

Poorly written article: Where's Nederland?

What happened to Clifford?

"Made it back to the car where a deputy found her waiting"...Huh?
