I heard years ago that during the Bay of Pigs, Kennedy basically was a disaster himself, unable to cope with the situation, he was a shambles behind his desk, surrounded with his advisers who were flabbergasted at his inability to have a cohesive thought. The story says they put together a plan, put him on downers, gave him a speech, etc.
Later he was made out to be a great leader who was very decisive at the whole thing.
No idea the truth behind this, but a story like that about Obama wouldn’t surprise me at all.

It later came out that the Cuban Missle Crisis was resolved by ABC newsman John Scali meeting with the Soviet Ambassador in a DC coffee shop.
I was in DC in the USAF (on full alert) at the time and there were multiple accounts of that meeting flying around.
