Hmmm. Let’s see if we have this straight. Tea Party activists opposing big-spending programs by a Democratic President who happens to be black? Racist. Big Hollywood star tells girlfriend that her tight clothes will get her raped by “a pack of f*****g n******s”? Nuanced. Even Joy Behar has trouble with Whoopi Goldberg’s attempt to use the “some of Mel Gibson’s best friends are black” defense on The View, and the two start playing their Complete Moral Authority cards in a liberal meltdown. Pass the popcorn and watch the clip from Mediaite:
You can say hes being a bonehead but I cant sit and say that hes a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I cant say it and so I really just need to say that. I dont like what hes done. Make no mistake. …
Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because theyre drunk. Theyre out of control. They are not thinking they are idiotic. Thats why I dont like alcohol. I cant say anything about that because I know what people are like when theyre drunk. This rant, I dont think hes drunk on this rant.
Except, as Mediaite’s Glynnis MacNicol points out, Gibson didn’t sound drunk at all in the clips aired by Radar Online. He certainly sounds like a bonehead, as Whoopi calls him, but last I checked, bonehead and racist are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they almost always go together, just like bonehead usually goes with misogynist. Who’d have thought that two liberal women on television would debate the finer points of racism and anti-Semitism in this kind of situation, and not mention the fact that the clip also included threats of violence against the mother of the man’s child? It’s like double standards squared on The View.
However, they may not be that out of the mainstream. Survey USA surveyed 500 adults in the Los Angeles area and found that Gibson hasn’t done a tremendous amount of damage to the brand. Only 39% had an unfavorable view of Gibson, with men and women holding identical 39% negative assessments. A majority of 52% believe Gibson can rehabilitate his image, and 61% said they would go see a new Gibson movie when it hits the screens. He may not even have to hit the Betty Ford Clinic with those numbers.
Update: I had the Gibson quote slightly incorrect, Jim Treacher e-mails; it should have read “a pack of …” Which, as Jim says, is actually somewhat worse.
I defended Mel for a little while at first. People say some nasty things when they’re breaking up. But then I heard the audio. This guy is out of his tree.
She needs to wear 'em on foot in Houston's 4th ward at night sometime and describe the experience.
She won't be asked to tea by the Presbyterian Ladie's Quilting Club, I'll tell you what.
Nice to see the Hollywood glitterati aren’t throwing each under under the bus every time - only when there is no reason for it.
However, that intensity shows up on screen sometimes, which is why he still gets work. If he makes another movie that interests me, I'll go see it. His offensive comments are no worse than Matt Damon's, Loony Clooney's, et al.
The term ‘racist’ is a term reserved for those whom minorities, the self proclaimed underdogs and downtrodden don’t like. To many minorities, they themselves can’t be ‘racist’ and likewise, those they like no matter what statement they make, no matter what their actions are, will never rise to the level of ‘racist.’ This term for many is simply an insult like calling someone an @sshole etc. It’s actual meaning has been lost.
Mel received several wake-up calls in recent years, but failed to heed the warnings. Now he will pay a great price, if not in Hollyweird money, at least in relationships. I am not so sure his threats to his baby-mama are not criminal, too.
And Whoopie Goldberg isn’t a moron.
I heard one of the audios and it was clear Mel needs some serious help. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt until I heard with my own ears. I really think alot of this stems from guilt, guilt from the breakdown of his marriage which I believe he bore the burden of on Leno (or some other show). He adversely affected his life, the life of his wife, and his seven (now eight) children. He’s got to seek God. Would be great if he could turn it around at some point and reconcile with the wife of his youth (if she’d have him).
As for his "baby momma" she's a piece of work too. What woman calmly records real, viable threats instead of calling police? And then goes to Russia with him? Also there was a restraining order issued by a judge on those tapes. She violated it.
Woopie is a racist POS asking if she was going to be a slave again when Juan McCain was on!
I am tired of this slave crap!!!!!!!!!!!!! I owe these Cretins Nothing Nothing.
She needs to walk around the NAACP side of town dressed that way and see the pack grab her like those kids in Tennessee But nothing is said about that.
Times are changing and there are things that need said!
thanks!
