Two thoughts immediately came to mind:
1. There is absolutely no indication in the story why this happened.
2. A number of the comments under the story are really nasty.

Tragic and senseless. The poor child was just starting her life.
If only mom had picked up the phone and called any number of doctors for help. Even her GP.
I reckon she was a high achiever as Mayor and would rather be dead than admit she needed assistance.

This smacks of a fight gone bad. Mom loses her cool, shoots daughter, realizes what she just did and the does herself. Either that or some kind of warped honor killing thing. This is just messed up.
