Hampshire workmen paint white lines around dead badger

Workmen painting white lines on a road left a gap for a dead badger because they said it was not their responsibility to move it.

The animal had been killed about a week before on the A338 near Downton, on the Hampshire-Wiltshire border.

Hampshire County Council said the workers did what they thought "was best" because it is the district council's job to remove carcasses.

“sub-contractor Bellstan were not “licensed or trained” to remove road kill.”

Must be union job.

#####

I wonder how many annual hours of continued education and examination are required to secure Road Kill Removal licensure.

Mel Kendal, county council environment chief, said: "We would usually liaise with our colleagues at the district council who dispose of animal carcasses on the highways to ensure the badger was removed before the white line painting crew did this stretch of road.

Perhaps you should liaise with the badger. You know, badger the badger.

Mean to say they didn’t have a shovel in their truck where they could remove the dead animal from the road and at least put it in the grass on the side of the road? That sounds like just a nice thing to do. But then again....

Council contractor Amey said the staff from sub-contractor Bellstan were not "licensed or trained" to remove road kill.

My dog is capable of doing that.

Mark Steyn described it best (as usual) writing about a funeral he attended over in the UK. Perhaps someone remembers the story and will post a link. [Formerly] Great Britain must be a union shop from border to border. The sun never sets on a shop steward,

Big deal.

NYC painted lines on a road they repaved a few weeks later!

Our town did a big re-do of the street at the end of our block. Made it wider by 3 feet or something for a bike path, redid the curbs, stripes, etc. It wasn’t 3 months later and new cable lines were put in a big trench.

About 3 months after that another trench was put in for another cable company.

Now the road is back to normal (old!) with the various patches, settling, etc.

“So, it was *murder*.”

Possibly. Cars don’t kill badgers. People kill badgers, or rogue SUVs.

Christine? Or I guess it would be Christopher (since it’s not PC to make a movie about an SUV that’s female).
