I'm glad the team went over there. Although I'm sure a largely not political event, a buddy put up on twitter a photo of a banner that said, "Peaceful nuclear energy is our definite right."

“Peaceful nuclear energy is our definite right.”

Just like the europeans - they just parrot what their newspapers tell them.

Like nuke energy is the issue. lol.

Like the Nork’s “one punch”, nuke energy?

If the government put on the tournament, I'm sure they are the one's who put it up. I assume the entity that paid for the banner is on it, but I the type is too small and in Persian in any case.

Title IX’s fault.

Title IX doesn’t help, but having to make the switch from collegiate style to freestyle (or Greco) after college also puts American wrestlers at a bit of a disadvantage.

And the current freestyle rules are something only a European could think were good.

Europeans?

What about Americans?

The Obot Media still controls the thoughts and feelings of Americans enough to have elected a federal government that would have made the Soviet Union during its hay-day proud.

A sissy vs. a shrimp.

My money would definitely be on the shrimp.

While Obama was complaining to the ref about how racist the rules are and he shouldn't be judged based on past matches Ahmadinejad would take him down from behind and make him cry.

No it’s different in Europe. At least there are different media options in America. In most of Europe there is one line, and that’s what the people hear, and that’s what they parrot.

In America it’s just some of the people.

America still has a lot of defences left. The EU has a lot more claim to “soviet-like” right now.

Title IX zapped 75% of the post high school wrestling programs in this country, I know because I was a victim at a Division 1 school. It’s a matter of losing the “Best and Brightest”, so to speak, not continuing to the higher levels in college, I know this because my son who wrestled from 2nd grade, started varsity as a freshman, and placed at state 3 times didn’t go on to wrestle at college because there was no program.

Transitioning from collegiate to freestyle, as this tournament was, is not as hard as you think. Those of us who wrestled in summer freestyle tournaments can attest to this. It’s a matter of balance and muscle memory learned at a young age and learning new rules, look how well college wrestlers do in MMA.

I fully agree that Title IX has been disastrous for collegiate wrestling. The current budget crisis in so many states is not helping either.

The transition is not hard when you are talking about competing against other wrestlers whose main focus is collegiate. It is more of a problem vs Iranians and Russians who have only focused on freestyle. That muscle memory is the problem. There are certain reactions that are trained into your system such as working to come off bottom immediately that are problematic in freestyle vs someone who is probably already better in par terre than you are. It takes time to transition into the new way of wrestling.

It probably takes two years of focus on one style to fully adjust to it at this point. That seems to be about right for Europeans coming over here who now have to learn how to get off bottom.

Maryland does seem to be putting a lot of effort into their program these days though. I think Kerry McCoy will do good things there.

Yes muscle memory from the bottom is problematic since locking hands is legal. But that’s just one position of three. Takedowns and top position are basically the same even though locking hands on top is a new transition. And I will admit there is not enough concentration on throws at the high school level, college for that matter. Back exposure is also a different transition but I maintain, and you got me with the point of muscle memory on bottom, learning basic balance and its muscle memory is key to the sport and applies to all aspects of martial arts which I consider wrestling to be at the center.

As for Kerry McCoy we only had one boy in our juniors program, who went on to win state, go on to wrestle at Maryland but predated his arrival. He had an asst coach make him do low squats with 200lbs and blew out his back and ruined his career. I hope Kerry has put a stop to that. Maryland as a state has an excellent Juniors program with 3 levels of competition, that rivals Pennsylvania, New jersey and Oklahoma. They didn’t have anything like it when I grew up in Chicago, it’s as popular and common as little league here.
