Two zebras are back with their owner tonight after escaping from an animal training farm. Onlookers and California sheriff's deputies worked to corral two zebras roaming the streets of Carmichael Saturday night. One zebra was injured after it ran into traffic and hit a car.
"There we saw the aftermath of an accident. When we asked the lady what happened she said, 'I was just hit with a zebra,' and she couldn't believe it either," witness Tom Turner said.
Tim Tanaka took charge by roping off an area to keep the animal safe while a crowd of people gathered to watch. Tanaka said he was concerned for the animal that she might "run out to the street." He said he was glad the crowd was there to prevent the animal from heading in their direction.
The zebra's owner, Michael Mustangi, is a professional cowboy and animal trainer. He explained the zebra's escape was part of an ongoing problem.
"They're actually kept in a pen that's actually impervious to dogs because I've had problems with feral dogs in the area in the past. I was actually handling them in an alley, loading them on a truck, to go to our property in Oregon where I'm going to be keeping them because of this very problem that I've had so recurring," Mustangi said.
The owner said the zebra's injuries from being hit by a car are only skin deep. "I'm just thankful that they're both well, the others are well and they're going to be in an environment where they're not in jeopardy of being harassed by somebody's unleashed dog," Mustangi said.
The other zebra caught was not hurt after being found in a swimming pool at an apartment complex.
