I know the type. You are driving along, and you see them waiting to pull on the road. But they just sit there. And sit. And sit. And you finally decide, I guess they are going to let me get by first, how nice. And then they pull out in front of you, forcing you to slam on your brakes, and then drive 10 mph below the speed limit.

It wasn’t that they were nice, it’s that they had no idea how to judge the speed of traffic, and took forever to react and make decisions.

Charles, Charles, Charles.

What would you have me do???

You’re doing 80. I’m doing 75. The car in the right lane is doing 70.

I can’t speed up. Traffic in front of me is also doing 75.

Should I slow down to 65 to pull behind the car in the right lane? That would piss you off even more.

I’m sorry you speed demons get angry and offended. You will just have to learn to live with your problems.

Well, if you keep adding things, eventually it will be impossible to do anything. How do you get into the right lane to exit the Hwy in this scenario?

You just dont want to be put out of your way, but you have no issue with doing it to other people. Otherwise, you would never have gotten into the left lane in the 1st place.

It was a long time ago. If something is really nice, you pretty much can expect government to make it illegal, or tax it.

Thanks for an entertaining thread!

Having read all posts, I can only say that I am grateful to never have to commute on a major route again!

I laughed til I wept at the discussion about driving in the left lane.

I am so glad not to be driving much anymore, and then mostly on empty roads.

Stay safe.

On Highways, speed limits are not necessary. In the city, they are entirely too low. They are set at 80% of the safe driving speed of a road in bad conditions. There is a road in Dallas that as you exit the Hwy, the road is 30 mph. Its even a commercial district. Total speed trap. Speed limits are set for money and not for safety.

Grr. Sorry meant to refer you to post 193.

Driving on the wide shoulder in Texas to let others pass is now a thing of the past,

If somebody is tailgating me when I’m doing 76, believe me, FRiend, I want to get out of their way as soon as I can do so SAFELY. It’s amazing to me that anyone (except the proverbial woman in labor) thinks that someone doing 76 mph is an obstruction. Especially when the right lane is full of traffic and I can’t get over SAFELY. I want that fool gone. (By the way, I didn’t just add this.)

I don’t tailgate in the left lane, I just get annoyed by the people blocking it. But I wouldn’t get annoyed if there was some sign the driver was simply waiting for a safe place to move over.

The easiest way for a driver to signal their intention to move over when safe, is if the drive puts on their turn signal, signalling that they are going to move over.

And most of the time, when the driver does this, the people in the next lane make space for them to move over. They know that it’s just a temporary inconvenience to them, since they expect the faster car will move back to the left as soon as the even faster car has passed.

And those in the right lane appreciate the signal, and appreciate the slower car coming over, because the alternative is the really fast car darting into their lane and trying to muscle around the slower car in the left lane, making things unsafe for everybody.

Are you saying that you regularly get stuck in the left lane because people in the next lane refuse to let you in when you signal? Because while I have seen a few drivers who cut you off rather than letting you in, most of the time people are courteous enough to make room for people who signal their intentions.

And I also find that most tailgaters are doing so to “send a signal”, and that they will back off when they see the driver in front of them has activated their right-turn blinker, thus signalling the intent to get out of the way.

I have actually felt safer in Germany driving at 220 km/h than driving here in the States. Drivers there know what the heck they are doing, plus there is driving courtesy there as well.

Everybody here is yip-yip-yapping about all the "problem" motorists out there. Well I find that the people who do the most complaining about other drivers are actually the worst drivers themselves.

I live in the Boston area and Boston is considered one of the places with the "worst" drivers. Well I have surprising news for you all, Boston actually has some of the best drivers in the world. By and large, we are extremely courteous, we stay within speed limits and we obey all the rules of the road. I cannot say enough good things about the drivers in the Boston area - they are by and large a fantastic group of motorists and I am very happy to be among them.

I’ve seen people use those special dedicated on-off ramps for passing (the ones where they take you off into your own lanes, and then you can exit while the entering traffic gets into the lanes, and then the lanes join back up to the main highway).

I’ve never had the privilege of seeing someone try to use a rest stop as a passing lane. Knowing how people don’t pay attention when parking to go to the bathroom, it’s a shock the guy made it through without either pancaking someone running to the toilet, or getting hit by any number of cars backing up to get back on the road.

Good point about signaling. But it ought to be obvious to the tailgater whether moving over to the right would be a safe thing for his prey to attempt.

I just read the post. Bummer. I was there at Goodfellow 21 years ago. Real friendly town to us Air Force folks.

If the traffic in front of you is doing 75, and you are doing 75, then there is no reason for anybody to be tailgating you.

We were talking about the case where you were blocking free access to the open highway, not a case where all the traffic in the left lane was moving at the same speed.

But I would never get mad at having to slow down a few seconds while someone moved into a slower lane. I don’t even get mad if someone in a slower lane signals to move into the left lane to pass an even slower car. It’s just a momentary inconvenience, and if the left lane is otherwise clear it’s easy enough to catch back up to where I was before.

But it’s not me that you have to worry about. It’s the fast drivers who don’t have any courtesy. They are going to tailgate, putting you at risk. They are going to try to pass you on the right even if there isn’t space, and cut back into your lane with inches to spare if they have to.

In short, they are going to threaten your life. Better to simply slow down, pull over, and let them pass, than put yourself at risk. Worse, they might pull a gun and shoot at you. Or just get mad enough to follow you off your exit, wait til you stop at a light, and come over and try to pull you out of the car and beat you to a pulp.

I’d rather have other cars on the road be ignorant of my existance. So I try to drive so as to not make anybody irritated at me. That includes moving over when people are going faster, and not tailgating people who are going slower.

...or swinging far left first...

While LOOKING to the right, meaning they are NOT looking where they are going.

The same scenario with left turners going right before turning left. Wonder what law of physics they think applies to this maneuver.

In the racing world this means taking the long way around, and unbalancing your vehicle when it needs all of the balance to make a fast and efficient turn.
