No one prefers a slower speed. I’m in the left lane because traffic in the right lane is congested and slow (and passing isn’t safe). If the speed limit is 70 mph, and I’m doing 76 mph in the left lane, that ought to be fast enough for you. If you need to go faster than that, you need to leave earlier.
True. If I’m doing 76 in the fast lane it’s because the guy in front of me is doing 76 also. And if some moron behind me wants to do 80? Too bad. Even if I could safely move over, then what will he do?
“d Im doing 76 mph in the left lane, that ought to be fast enough for you. If you need to go faster than that, you need to leave earlier.”
If the speed limit is 70, and you are doing 68 with open space in front of you in the left lane; move over.
Let the 20 annoyed cars behind you in the left lane move and let the interstate open up.
In most states the law is to get out of the left when safe if somebody comes up from behind, no matter how far they must be breaking the speed limit. It used to be a simple courtesy, but too many were on the road with your attitude so the states started making it the law. How “too fast” I’m going is none of your business, the left lane is for the fast, if you aren’t the fastest get out of the way.
If “no-one prefers a slower speed”, why would you only drive 76 if you could drive 80? Isn’t that the very definition of “preferring a slower speed”?
I realise you might “prefer” the slower speed simply because you don’t want to get a traffic ticket, but it’s still a preference, and one not shared by the person who is tailgaiting you hoping to get you to move over.
