Norwegian kayaker escapes from jaws of polar bear when partner shoots animal dead

A Norwegian kayaker who was dragged by his head for 45 yards in the jaws of a polar bear has told how he escaped when his expedition partner shot the animal dead.

Despite protecting their tent with a trip-wire hooked to a early warning flare, Mr Nilssen woke face-to-face with the biggest land predator on Earth.

The 23-year-old was dragged screaming from the tent, with his head clamped in the animal's jaws.

The adult male bear flung the young explorer's body like a rag doll from side to side in an attempt to stun him, a technique typically used on its usual prey of seals.

The polar bear's teeth pierced Mr Nilssen's lung as it fought for a better grip and narrowly missed a main artery in the young Norwegian's neck.

"It was so strong I could not fight, I grabbed for my shotgun and tried to shoot it but [the polar bear] had snapped [the gun] in half.

Aren’t Kodiak Island Grizzlies supposed to be the largest (that is until they prove the existence of the legendary short nosed giant bear in Kamchatka, Russia) bears on earth? Mind you, the polar bears I’ve seen in zoos are huge and those in the wild are no doubt larger still, so you could be right.

Never bring a shotgun to a polar bear fight.>>>>>>>>>>>

Untrue, if you can unlimber it before the polar bear is on you. Once a bear has hold of you or taking swats at you, it doesn't much matter what kind of gun you have. A 12 gauge slug will take down any ground animal we have on the planet if its within 75 yards.

That might be absolutely accurate. I'm not trying to portray myself as any kind of authority. I just know what Animal Planet tells me. I do remember reading or watching something on the enormity of those Kodiak Island bears. They're huge.

In 1960 in Kotzebue, Alaska a Polar Bear was killed weighing 2,210 lbs and was 11’11” long/tall.

Too serious? We have some serious bear threads here historically, you might like this one.
