Did you know....

...3.)
Approximately 150 people are killed every year by falling coconuts. Therefore, you are more than 60 TIMES MORE LIKELY to be killed by a PALM TREE than a Pit Bull.

Nope! Live out in the country, in, wait for it, south Mississippi! Step right out my back door and target practice. And I am very neighborly, as long as you don’t try and tell me what kind of dog I can have!

Here's a link: Dog Attack deaths and maimings, 1982-2006

Of course, we don't know how many of each dog there are, but the pit bull breed accounts for over 40% of all the deaths on the chart. Rottweillers are another 20%. That leaves 40% for all the remaining dog breeds put together.

Wolf Hybrids are 3rd, with Huskies, and German Shepherds are close behind.

As I said, the numbers do not appear to be adjusted for the number of dogs of each breed -- but I don't suspect that pit bulls are a majority of the dogs owned by Canadians and Americans.

BTW, from that same story is this paragraph describing the unique dangers of the Pit Bull:

Of the breeds most often involved in incidents of sufficient severity to be listed, pit bull terriers are noteworthy for attacking adults almost as frequently as children. This is a very rare pattern: children are normally at greatest risk from dogbite because they play with dogs more often, have less experience in reading dog behavior, are more likely to engage in activity that alarms or stimulates a dog, and are less able to defend themselves when a dog becomes aggressive. Pit bulls seem to differ behaviorally from other dogs in having far less inhibition about attacking people who are larger than they are. They are also notorious for attacking seemingly without warning, a tendency exacerbated by the custom of docking pit bulls' tails so that warning signals are not easily recognized. Thus the adult victim of a pit bull attack may have had little or no opportunity to read the warning signals that would avert an attack from any other dog.

DING DING DING!
Someone cited the Merrit Clifton Study. Two more points if someone starts whining about magical ‘locking jaws’...

Not to belabor the point then, but really you are not the target audience for my part of the discussion, as you don’t really seem to have neighbors in the sense being used. There are few people who care what animals you own if you live in the middle of nowhere.

It’s a lot different when you live in a cookie-cutter neighborhood of houses close enough together that a dog in one yard could run through a couple dozen yards in a matter of minutes. That’s where most people express their fear and loathing of aggressive dogs. They aren’t worried about a country dog in the middle of nowhere attacking their children walking on a sidewalk to school. They are worried about their children being attacked by a pit bull living next door where their children have to walk by the fence on the way to school.

Odin had a 7 oz. raw steak for breakfast, from his own private stash.

So there!

Drat. Now I crave chicken...and I don't even really *like* chicken.

Lettuce. Hard boiled eggs, chicken, whoops. I said that word. ;)

I'll stop now. I have work to do, laundry to fold, bed to go to!!!

Hey y'all...it's been a fun weekend...we've all learned stuff. :)

Either way, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to break out the crowbar to pry my dog’s mouth open after he bites into a cookie with too much enthusiasm. He was stuck shut for a week the first time he got ahold of a little hop-frog...

WTH?!?!

“Doberman: One miniature pinscher apparently joined two pit bull terriers in attacking a child.”

A Dobermann is now a miniature pinscher?

The two breeds aren’t even related.
