Some details from a local source...found at TOD:

Coast Guard: Mile-long sheen spreading from burning platform

************************************EXCERPT***************************************

The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site of the Mariner Energy-owned platform.

“At 9:19 a.m., the Coast Guard received a call from neighboring platform was that platform 380 completely engulfed in flames,” said Gov. Bobby Jindal during an afternoon update on the fire.

As of 1 p.m., Jindal said that fire was still burning, though Mariner officials had told his office that the blaze had been contained and nearly burned out.

Mariner informed the governor that the platform had seven active wells on the platform, and that one of the seven wells caught fire, said Jindal.

CEO told CNBC all wells were closed......

***************************************************

The platform was identified as Vermilion 308 A, according to Mariner.

"Mariner has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident. The cause is not known, and an investigation will be undertaken. During the last week of August 2010, production from this facility averaged approximately 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and 1,400 barrels of oil and condensate," said Bill Mintz, a spokeman for Apache, in a statement.

Responding to an oil spill in shallow water is much easier than in deepwater, where crews depend on remote-operated vehicles access equipment on the sea floor.

The platform is about 200 miles west of BP's blown out Macondo well. On Friday, BP was expected to begin the process of removing the cap and failed blow-out preventer, another step toward completion of a relief well that would complete the choke of the well. The BP-leased rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 people and setting off a massive oil spill.

Media reports are still confused in important details I think.

I believe someone a whole lot wiser than I once said that the South will rise again. It’s just taking a little longer than we thought. Maybe caused by someone who was mad because Earl chose to go up the east cost rather than toward the Gulf. Tnx for the update. Will pass it on to a client whose livelihood depends on survival of the energy industry in the Gulf. Not quite as liberal leaning as he was before the last spill.

Depends on the stability of the sub and the strength of the thrower, or maybe the guy used a RPG ~ a common enough weapon.
