A peek aboard 'Deadliest Catch' boat the Wizard
Seattle PI ^ | September 2010 | Amy Rolph

There's a television star moored at a dock in Ballard, but not for much longer.

Later this month, the Wizard will sail back to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The crab-fishing boat, one of five featured on the Discovery Channel show "Deadliest Catch," spends its springs and summers in Seattle.

It spends autumn and winter on the Bering Sea while crew members pull pots of crabs up from the ocean floor. The Wizard's fishing season has been documented by camera crews for several years, but television can't quite capture what it's like to be aboard the 65-year-old vessel.

There's nothing like diesel fumes to bring on an epiphany -- except maybe standing inside the dim belly of a rusting crab tank.

You realize: There's nothing glamorous about life on a crab boat.

Keith Colburn wears Carhartts and a broken-in baseball cap that bears the name of his boat: "Wizard."

...Last season, the show chronicled the death of Phil Harris, skipper of the Cornelia Marie. The Discovery Channel announced Wednesday that Harris' sons will be returning for the seventh season.

I passed this boat 2 weeks ago. My host pointed it out, along with the Tom Hanks house in Sleepless in Seattle. Pretty cool.

I love the show. I will miss Phil (he was my favorite captain).

"Eau de diesel is pretty much what we smell like," Colburn jokes. "When I get home, my wife just wants to burn everything."

Diesel is pretty strong but I'm surprised that it would surpass the fishy smell of crab and crab bait.

I told my wife that if I were ever to go out on a crab boat, I would want to go with Sig and if he was not available, Phil.

The rest of them pale next to those men.

Cheers,

Definitely. I think they/were the best captains. Sig was more intense in personality and Phil was more laid back (in my opinion). The last episodes of last season showed Sig devastated by the news of Phil’s passing. I am not really into reality shows but this one was different to me. I will say that I purchased more crab legs and “respected” the seafood more. R

Sig needs to “Retire” it’s obvious that he stresses “big time” ... it’s only a matter of time before he vaporlocks on TV.

He needs to turn the boat over to someone that respects and enjoy the fruits of his labors far away from the stress.

He can still be a commentator (like Football guys) and live much longer.

JMHO

TT

PS Yep Sig is my guy (tough / fair and nostalgic) but it’s a really close call... I love em all, I must just worry about him the most.

DC is a great show. The last cowboys working in the last frontier in the purest form left of capitalism. They Bering Sea is a harsh mistress. 40 foot waves, 40 knot winds and -10 degress and still they fish. Filmed at about the same time we have the sea hippies of the Whale Wars that can barely launch a small bast without almost killing someone and running out of fuel on the high seas.

BTW Sig is the man but I did like Phil. However, friends from Dutch tell me the Time Bandit is the money maker year after year.

BTW Sig is the man...

Lots of Viking blood alive and well in both Sig and Edgar.

Yeah, Sig recently came to Norway and was on some talk show. Pretty cool. His father came from Haugesund....I think.

How much do these guys make in an average season? I hope it’s a lot because theirs is about the most difficult and dangerous job I’ve ever seen. Also, how long is the season?

I think it varies, but with each season, they can make over $30,000-$50,000 over a 6-8 week stretch. That doesn’t take into consideration that there are 2 different crab seasons- king crabs and then the opilio or snow crabs.
