I have never had a Thermaltake or CoolerMaster PS fail in the last three years. And they go for $25 after a discount. Was in CompUSA last week and saw the same 430 watt CoolerMaster I have-—2 fans-—additional new connectors-—$25 after a rebate. I like ThermalTake a little better

Now, OTOH, so-called "features" that could qualify as "spyware", that's another story... :)

I recently had my iMac check for software updates. It told me I had the latest software but that my credit card payment was due. :-)

As far as numbers.... Last computer I put together January 2010...

dual core Athlon Regor 245
$100 for mobo&processor. Mobo has great video
$35 memory
$25 PS
$0 for case
$40 for HD
$20 for DVD writer/reader

I could do just as well right this moment but memory would be $82 (4 GB Crucial) and would get a new SATA-DVD unit for $20

We are ALL very proud of you!

The above numbers are why I have only disdain for the Apple rip-off machine.

Envy is a terrible thing.

Dennis, I am sure you are aware that Michael Dell can buy parts and build a computer cheaper than you can. He got started doing that in his dorm room at the University of Texas. And, supposedly, volume lowers costs, so why do Dell Computers sell for so much in relation to their costs?

Don't believe that propaganda shyte....depending on sales and rebates I can build cheaper and with nice on-board videos out in DVI and HDMI...... which Dell often neglects. Making you buy a video card

I admit more and more comps do come with DVI and HDMI

You are hallucinating. I have some favorite charities.... Apple is not on the list. You want to donate money to Apple/Jobs/Cupertino mafia brainwashing hoodlums that's your business. I have no such need for self affirmation

I like ThermalTake a little better

Let's check out the one you linked. Thermaltake is generally a good brand. It's low efficiency, guaranteed only to not dip below 65%. It's a bit louder than the other models. It's also missing PFC. Its list price is also $44 rebated down to $32.

Consider a higher Thermaltake, the XT TPX-575M for $120. You aren't paying that much more for the wattage. You are paying for the up to 88% efficiency, the high-quality components, the smooth voltage, the active PFC, more connectors, bigger fan and lower noise. It even has a modular cable design, so you only use the cables you need, freeing up the interior air flow.

I was hoping you would pick up on the fact of the costs of manufacturing, packaging, shipping, advertising, customer support, etc., were significant costs that Dell has that you don’t but you missed that. Comparing what you do for yourself to international retail sales is a fools game. That is why I think there has to be some emotion, like envy, involved on your part to cause you to block out the obvious.

The above PS gets very good reviews and is more what you want....$39. Earlier today you would have gotten a very good video card too with this for another $20. You Apple fan guys are always missing out out on great deals. It is suffocating to buy an imposed solution from the Jobs gang

So go buy a Dell. All I know is I can usually build cheaper and better than Dell. Like I said, that depends on buying components on sale which I did last Christmas at Newegg and CompUSA and.....Also depends on rebates

You have a thing for DVI huh? Then thank Apple, which was an early champion of the technology. But you're behind the times, since DisplayPort is the successor with twice the video bandwidth of even dual-link DVI. You won't like that because although it's supported by IBM, HP and others, Apple was also part and a major proponent. It first appeared standard in Apple's notebook line, and the other major players followed. Now it's standard on all Apple computers. BTW, remember that USB didn't take off either until Apple went full-in on it.

To utilize a laptop’s displayport you use an HDMI kind of cable to connect to an HDMI monitor? No displayport connector needed on monitor?

I have been using digital connected LCD monitors since about 1999.... think it was a 14” Princeton LCD.

I have used DVI since it came out. Prior to DVI I used the digital connector that Compaq was behind....Was called flat panel-link or something like that. Used that in 1999 and for the next 2-3 years

Not bad, but still not a very efficient PSU, as it can dip well below 80% depending on the load (efficiency varies by load). And you're still well above $25. If you want that price range, look into a CoolerMaster Silent Pro, a more efficient PSU, and WAY quieter under load. The cheap hunk-o-junk PSU you originally quoted and were so proud of would never be allowed in a computer I built. When I build I also tend to buy heat sink/fan combos that cost $30 and up, add $10 for a tube of silver grease (although that'll last you many applications). Don't forget a good mini- or mid-tower case, at least $60. You can avoid buying extra case fans for a moderately-powered computer by buying a good PSU and case, and good fans cost $20 and up.

See, we've already established, with only three components, that my home-built PC would cost quite a bit more than yours, mainly due to the use of higher-quality parts.

It is suffocating to buy an imposed solution from the Jobs gang

Difference between hobbyist and wanting a complete, functioning product with a solid warranty and award-winning support. Some people want to build their cars and tinker forever. Others just want solid, reliable transportation. I have a foot in each camp for both computers and cars.

Ah, an LCD fan. Then you'd like how Apple ditched standalone CRTs completely in 2001, and dropped them on the iMac in 2002, making the move away from consumer CRTs long before any other manufacturer. Oh no, you wouldn't. You don't like Apple.

I have used DVI since it came out. Prior to DVI I used the digital connector that Compaq was behind....Was called flat panel-link or something like that. Used that in 1999

Apple's LCD Cinema Display in 1999 shipped with DVI.

DisplayPort out-performs HDMI and is more flexible, so why limit a system? DisplayPort is meant to plug into DisplayPort displays, but if you have an HDMI TV you can get an adapter (DisplayPort is capable of carrying an HDMI signal). Even then higher-end LCD TVs are starting to ship with DisplayPort connectors for your laptop, so you may not need an adapter.

The difference is who is going to make charitable donations to Jobs and Company. I don't but go ahead if you want to. You can donate them to your hearts content
I prefer to build an excellent functional PC and save my money, some of which I will donate to charity but no donations to the Cupertino mafia. They'll just have to get along without me

My question to you has always been who gives a damn what you can buy and build? That has nothing to do with the retail market. So why do you continue to disparage us who buy from the retail market? We don’t care what you can buy and build it for, we only care what we can buy and what we choose to buy. Why do you keep bothering the rest of us with your personal likes and dislikes?

I get it....you don’t care...you don’t care....you don’t care..... yet you engage me on those very subjects. Like I said, go buy a Dell or make a charitable donation of money you don’t want or need to the Cupertino cabal. It’s no skin off my azz.
