Reds set to celebrate Rose's record knock Club will recognize 25th anniversary of hit No. 4,192 on Saturday

CINCINNATI -- Much of the Reds' plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pete Rose becoming baseball's hit king remain under wraps, but fans should arrive at Great American Ball Park early on Saturday.

Pregame ceremonies to commemorate Rose's 4,192nd career hit, which surpassed Ty Cobb on the all-time list on Sept. 11, 1985, begin at 6:30 p.m. ET -- 40 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. Gates open at 5:20 p.m.

Tickets remain available for the Reds' game vs. the Pirates.

There will be a video tribute to Rose, who will appear on the field. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig had to approve the Reds' plans to honor Rose. Former teammates Tony Perez, Ken Griffey Sr., Tommy Helms, Tom Browning and Cesar Geronimo are also scheduled to appear.

Rose finished with 4,256 career hits over 24 seasons with the Reds, Phillies and Expos.

Because he is banned from baseball, Rose is ineligible for election to the Hall of Fame and is not allowed to work in the game. The only previous time Selig granted permission for Rose to participate in an official league-sanctioned activity was during the naming of the All-Century Team at the 1999 All-Star game.

On Sunday, Rose and his family will also be in attendance at the series finale vs. the Pirates. Following the game, Fox Sports Ohio will air the 1985 game during which Rose hit his record-setting single to left-center field off the Padres' Eric Show at Riverfront Stadium.

Growing up being a Cincinnati Reds fan I and watching Pete Rose play, he gave 100% on every play and watching him dive into 3rd in the 75 Series, the 44 game hit streak and then he left to go to Philly. Then to come back after getting 4,000 hit in Montreal and the anticipation of the 85 Season as the team was improving from the lost years of 82-84 and breaking a record many would have thought would stand forever.

Well, Pete's record has stood for 25 years and Ichiro and Jeter are the only players I think with a chance to break it in the next 20 years.

That’s when 9/11 to me was memorable for something else much more enjoyable.

Ichiro, had a chance if he had started his career over here. I think age will get to him.

Ichiro nor Jeter or anyone else will ever break that record.

Pete did wrong, BUT baseball is worse off without him and he
without baseball.
It is long past time for Pete to be welcomed at the ball park.

Not that he wasn’t a great player, but if not for really fast plastic carpet infields, Petey would never have broken the record. As I remember it, that was the main reason he chose the teams he went to, because he could slap balls through the infield on the plastic grass. A slap hitter in a power hitter’s body.

Even though Jeter started a year younger than Rose, he is never going to get to 4G.

Why the Hell is Pete Rose not in the Hall of Fame??

Bush should have pardoned Rose before leaving office

I was recently looking at Pete Rose's career numbers. What I found interesting is that the only thing he did was hit. He didn't excel in RBI’s or home runs. In fact all his stats are incredibly average EXCEPT for hits. I honestly don't know that if he had not gotten caught gambling that his numbers merit the Hall of Fame anyway.

Of course not, but the majority of hits on plastic grass, due to playing more than half the games on those kinds of fields.

Don't know about you, but I'm glad Astroturf is mostly gone. The newer stuff is much more like natural grass so that a ground balls that should be outs don't scoot through.

Regardless, he would have had in the high 3000's hits even without the plastic grass. But he wouldn't have broken Cobb's record, I don't think.

Agree but sadly Bush knew that Cincinnati will always vote Republican anyway.

I’m willing to forgive Rose but I want all the rednecks in Price Hill to forgive Johnny Bench for saying that he suspected Rose was guilty. Rose was in fact guilty and Bench deserved better.

The rednecks in old Price’s Hill will never forgive Bench because of the love which dare not speak its name stuff.

“I honestly don’t know that if he had not gotten caught gambling that his numbers merit the Hall of Fame anyway.”

Admittedly considering his long-term mendacity it’s hard to feel much sympathy for Pete Rose. But Rose was a key player on championship teams in two different cities. If not for Rose the Phillies would have won their first ever World Series in 2008 instead of 1980. I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame as a player, and banned from baseball as a manager.

If there is a gambler’s hall of fame he should be inducted there. It would be one thing if he played for the love of the game but it was more like for the love of money. This explains a lot of his actions on the field.

He bet on his own team but never against it. He was a honest gambler.....give me a break.

Baseball will always remain a joke until Pete is in the Hall of Fame.

To me, he was Charlie Hustle. He ran out every ground ball and even slid into first base. He was the epitome of baseball and how it should be played.

Why the Hell is Pete Rose not in the Hall of Fame??

Because he disgraced the game by betting on games. Baseball almost died after the Black Sox scandal, it took tough action by Kennesaw Landis to save the game.

I think Pete and Derek started at the same age, Pete played 24 seasons and retired at age 46. You have to average about 177 hits per season, every season to beat the record. Good luck.
