WASHINGTON (Reuters) Even seemingly gentle antibiotics may severely disrupt the balance of microbes living in the gut, with unforeseen health consequences, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
An intimate study of three women given ciprofloxacin showed the drug suppressed entire populations of beneficial bacteria, and at least one woman took months to recover.
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, supports the common wisdom that antibiotics can damage the "good" germs living in the body.
It may also support the idea behind the development of so-called probiotic products including yogurt with live cultures of bacteria.

I think a lot of people think tiny bottle, expensive tag, probably wont do much or last that long. If they even know what essential oils are or what they can do.You're right! I tried a number of times to make suggestions to my sister (with MS) and my friend (with cancer), but they pooh-poohed natural aids.
Thanks for telling me that. Makes me feel a bit better. It does not seem to bother me much. Mostly just a bit woozy. No stomach problems yet. I will, however, get to the store for more yogurt today.
Not sure what that is. The sulfur I’m speaking about is when it is used topically, as in creams or medicine for the acne.
Good grief, how do you afford the oils. Those prices are way out of my reach. The New Age terms used there in the directions are also Greek to me. I would be lost as to how to use them. Guess I’ll have to stick with my “home” remedies.
Last year was the first year one of my daughters was prescribed anti-biotics a lot.
First, a few years ago, she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder, and puton anti-seizure medication. The medication caused her vitamin d levels to plummet, and we’re having a hard time bringing them up to a normal level.
She also has terrible allergies and can’t take a lot of medications because they give her headaches or cause or lower her seizure threshold.
Last year, she got lots of respiratory infections that would not go away. It was during all the H1N1 scare. She had the shot, but I think she still may have gotten it.
Anti-biotics were the only thing that helped her kick the infections.
This year, we are working totally on prevention (more vitamin d, allergy shots, nasal spray, and advair for her lungs).
I hate putting her on anti-biotics, so I hope what we are doing now helps keep her healthy.
This is from Oregano Cures web site that sells an Oil of Oregano product:
Oil of Oregano, Super Strength Oil of Oregano, Herbacillin, Oil of Sage, Oil of Garlic, Oil of Rosemary
Internally (Oral):
Do not add drops to a drink (water, juice, etc.). The Medicinal Spice Oil will stick to the sides of the glass and you will get only a fraction of your desired dose. This method also maximizes the amount of oil which gets on your tongue, creating a very unpleasant effect. Our method outlined below minimizes the amount of oil on your tongue creating a far more pleasant experience.
2: Open the bottle
3: Tilt your head back with your tongue on the roof of your mouth.
4: Hold the bottle on a 45 degree angle (bottle neck down) over your open mouth. DO NOT SHAKE THE BOTTLE.
5: Drops will begin dripping slowly into your mouth. You should aim so that the drops land just slightly behind your lower front teeth. Try not to get any drops on your lips or tongue.
6: Once you have dripped the desired amount of drops into your mouth, return the bottle upright and bring you head level with the floor with your tongue still on the roof of your mouth.
7: Hold your head this way for approximately 15 - 3- seconds. You will begin to feel a warming sensation in your mouth, this is normal.
8: Drink your drink (from step 1) quickly and fully.
9: Cap the bottle, wash your hands with soap and water and enjoy your good health!
To minimize the aftertaste that some people experience, try adding Pure-le Natural Chlorophyll Concentrate (regular, not mint) to the water (from step 1).
Internally (Oral) for children:
Place 1 drop of the Medicinal Spice Oil in a teaspoon of raw (unpasteurized) honey or maple syrup. We find children love the “exotic” sweet taste and will actually ask for more!
Externally (Topically):
Try using the drops neat (undiluted). If this proves too strong, dilute the drops in a carrier oil (jojoba, wheat germ, safflower, olive, etc.) and try again. At the beginning try using a dilution of 5 drops Medicinal Spice oil, per 1/4 teaspoon carrier oil. If this is too strong, continue adding carrier oil until the desired strength is achieved. Over time, as you get used to using Medicinal Spice Oils slowly work your way to increasing the potency by reducing the amount of carrier oil.
Inhallation:
Add a couple drops to a cotton ball and place the cotton ball directly under your nose. Do not inhale deeply, simply breathe normally through your nose.
usually the side effects happen pretty quickly so you are probably okay. But it is really a strong med.
Hope you will be well soon.
Good luck. Carley
Good grief, how do you afford the oils.*smiling* When all is said and done, it evens out for me financially. For instance, I used to have lots of problems with angst, which I'd have to go to the doctor for and get a prescription. This cost me time, money, gas (a hassle!) and now I can just use 3-4 drops of a particular oil, and not only is the angst gone, but I've not put any stress on my body using chemicals. (No dopey feeling whatsoever.) I'm down to taking only one chemical now and that is for my thyroid. My poor body, through years of continual antibiotic usage (for which I'm now using Oregano Oil or Thieves Oil/products), excessive Tylenol usage (I now use PanAway and Peppermint), over-the-counters in all sorts of meds, is toxic indeed, which I'm working on to eliminate. But, like you, we use home remedies too. Organic garlic, honey, green tea, ginger, lemon, cayenne tincture, all the time. Yummy!
LOL. That’s about the way I’ve got it figured. I’m actually very healthy for my age (77). Just have to get/keep a handle on the diverticulitis. Only meds I take is Levothyroxin for thyroid and an extremely small amount of Clonapin for a neurological condition that I’ve had for years (bad wiring). I never catch colds or other viruses. AFAIK I’ve never had the flu. I still run and I still hold down my job, which requires me to be on call 24/7.
MSM is an analogue of DMSO, which does not produce “DMSO breath.”
Some people think it helps in cases of hair loss (among other things).
I think it is worth a little Google research.
DG
Thank you. Will research.
An intimate study of three women given ciprofloxacin showed the drug suppressed entire populations of beneficial bacteria, and at least one woman took months to recover.'Take it with yogurt' has been the standard precaution for at least 20 years. Thanks decimon.
I’m not sure if it works the same way, and besides, it was pulled from the market last year due to being a cause of gastrointestinal conditions, such as Crohn’s disease, if the slip-and-fall lawyer commercials are to be believed.
That's pretty much my story, although I think my teen acne was worse than the adult stuff, but only a little bit. I'm also using a generic Retin-A cream, rather than brand, so maybe one of the "inert" ingredients in the brand-name stuff exacerbates skin conditions.
For me it’s the Retin-A because I tried several different brands and every time I have used any cosmetic with Retin-A I get serious breaking out.
In that case, thank Heaven I don’t have to use cosmetics (unless I go Goth or something, which is unlikely at my age).
LOL. You know, this thread gave me an idea. Do you think that a Medi-share daily thread would be a good idea for FR? It seems that when a medical problem or question comes up, the thread attracts a lot of interest. It would take someone with more time than I have to monitor it. Just a thought.
This is the beginning of denying people antibiotics. They have saved my life.
They want to make you happy to be denied antibiotics.
Cipro saved my life. I had no bad side effects.
I have taken it a few times and never had bad effects.
I was depressed before I took it because I was very ill.
Aspirin is dangerous to the stomach. Causes bleeding in some people.
