In tonight's sneak peek premiere of Jimmy Smits' Outlaw, a case inspires conservative Supreme Court Justice Garza to shed his cape and step down from the bench to get back into the ring. Armed with insider knowledge, Smits, the gambling womanizer, vows to take on the nation's biggest and most controversial legal cases and make a difference.
Fans who think they know what to expect from a Jimmy Smits vehicle may want to tune into tonight's sneak peek of Outlaw on NBC. Judge Cyrus Garza has Smits' swagger and good looks, but this is a whole new game for the veteran actor and one of our picks for fall's top shows.
"It's a wonderful meal for an actor to play and it's something different than what I've done before," star and co-executive producer Smits said. "I'm going to be able, as an actor, to tackle stuff that's very substantive and play a character that's much more loose and comfortable than I've had a chance to play. It's a challenge for me and I can't wait."

The premise is simple, a sitting Supreme Court justice unexpectedly resigns to resume a career in private practice. Who is this Justice? He's a "conservative" Bush appointee, who parenthetically has a profound gambling problem, is a misogynist, is ridiculously cavalier about pending capital cases, engages in in unethical ex parte conversations about said capital cases and he does this while exiting a casino he was gambling in, and uses the ex parte dialogue as a pick-up rouse to bed a fine young lass - oh, and that's literally only in the first five minutes.
Of course, he gets "social justice" religion halfway through the episode and has to quit the bench so he can represent the "people" in their fight against the man. The "fight" in the first episode is to free from death row who is wrongly convicted. Naturally, his redemption can only come by casting away his conservative principles and fighting for the "little guy".
This is what passes for broadcast entertainment in America today.
Ah, I think I’ll pass on this one. My old VHS copies of Night Court sound a lot more entertaining (and realistic).

I will skip this one. There must be a very good reason it is stuck on at 10 PM on Fridays.
I watched for 10 minutes and was so bored I switched to DIY where I think they were doing a documentary on the history of finishing nails.
In short, this show sucked.

I’ve listened to some ads for this new show. They make me want to be somewhere else.
I had the EXACT same reaction when I saw "Eyes Wide Shut".
This show, in addition to being ridiculously bent in its politics, is just bad - bad acting, bad writing, bad directing bad everything.
That's pretty bad. Definitely a show I won't be watching then.
"Reality" shows. Cop-and-lawyer shows. Panel-of-judges shows.
Haven't turned on the tube since Sunday (football).

How is this different from your role as District Attorney in Dexter Season 3? Oh wait, Dexter actually has good writing.
Season 3 was the worst season of Dexter, btw. You really weren’t a good villain.

I tuned into “Outlaw” only because my wife and I had just finished watching Season 3 of Dexter on DVD. We both thought that the role of Miguel was Jimmy Smits best ever so we had some hope that it might carry over.....10 minutes in we switched the TV off....
Gee, another tv show or movie about an inmate who was wrongly convicted and faces execution. I guess Hollyweird has only made about about a million of these types of episodes in the last half century. How about one where the perp is actually guilty, gets released, and goes out and kills some more people because he wasn’t properly snuffed?
When you get your wish, it'll probably be an Angry, Disgruntled Tea Partier.
