Who are the Browns?

Tune in for Sister Wives, premiering Sunday, Sept. 26, at 10 PM (ET/PT), and explore the complex daily life of a polygamist family.

Meet husband Kody — along with his three wives: Meri, Janelle and Christine and their combined 13 children — and see how they attempt to navigate life as a "normal" family in a society that shuns their lifestyle. From their unconventional family structure and living arrangements to financial challenges, each half hour episode exposes the inner workings of a polygamist household, revealing the unexpectedly tight-knit and loving relationships between Kody's wives.

Sister Wives also captures the intense dynamics surrounding a man juggling three wives while attempting to keep it a secret from the outside world — but the general public is not the only challenge that the Brown family unit is facing. The series begins with Kody announcing plans to take on another wife and her three kids — and although expected, the news is met with mixed feelings. Meri, Janelle and Christine were married before starting families so all of the children grew up as siblings. And for sixteen years, the Sister Wives have established their own role within the group and worked together to maintain a cohesive, loving unit. Bringing on a fourth wife could easily disrupt the balance, changing lives forever. The series chronicles the growing pains as Robyn and her kids assimilate into the family and the sister wives work through the insecurities and uncertainties that are inevitable to their chosen way of life.

What the heck is going on?

Polygamy is ILLEGAL!

Why is this being allowed as a show?

The "husband" of these three women, claims to be a

"fundamentalist Mormon - like a fundamentalist Catholic or a fundamentalist Christian but NOT like an LDS Mormon".

How can TLC run a show on polygamy which is ILLEGAL to practice in the United States?

The United States Supreme Counrt BANNDED polygamy in all 50 states!

Has our culture gotten THIS bad?

What's the matter with these women?

Polygamy is ILLEGAL!

In cases I've read about, they aren't married under the law, just a religious recognition. As for how it is seen by the law, they are just all living together unwed..

Ah the confusion of people ... this is terribly unhealthy for our society. Our culture is becoming more and more like Sodom ad Gomorrah.

Just further perversion of God’s intention for marriage. He made Eve for Adam, not Eve and Alice and Charlotte for Adam.

Feeling that they are close to total success on making homosexual marriage legit, they are now taking the next step towards destroying traditional marriage.

‘Our culture is becoming more and more like Sodom ad Gomorrah. ‘

If God doesn’t punish America, he's gonna have to apologize about Sodom and Gomorrah.

No law about living together. He may be officially married to one of them.

The scary thing is TLC joining HBO in going whole hog in normalizing polygamy. Standard technique. Pick some squeaky-clean, salt-of-the-earth types and pretend they’re the norm. Put them forward as media image darlings, lather, rinse, repeat. Soon enough, some lobbying group will be formed or maybe the ACLU will take up the cause and just keep trying to establish some landmark case, cracking it wide open, maybe a local politician or two will make it their cause if there are sufficient numbers in a certain locale to be worth pandering to.

The important thing is, they need lily-white, non-threatening FLDS types. Nobody is going to find sinister muzzies to be sympathetic characters.

That's true.. one is under the law to keep taxes and home ownership stuff clean, but the other two are just non-legally recognized, girlfriends (for a lack of a better term).

You’re right!

I KNOW that the U.S.S.C. BANNED polygamy. I can’t find it on the web. What I did find was this:

Obama’s Nominee for EEOC Promotes Polygamy and Homosexuality
By Deal W. Hudson, Ph.D.
10/21/2009

...

In a paper written for the “Moral Values Project” at the Georgetown Law School, Feldblum describes one kind of polygamous relationship the government should support: NSDPs, or “nonsexual domestic partners.” She explains, “The state has an obligation to recognize and support these non-sexual domestic partnerships — these ‘moral units’ of society — as well as sexual relationships that offer care and support.”

Feldblum’s advocacy of the homosexual lifestyle is quite startling, given the fact that she teaches at a Catholic law school. As a matter of fact, she is seen in this video arguing not only that the government has a duty to promote homosexuality but also proclaiming, “Gay sex is morally good.”

What a sick society. We package perversion and dysfunction and sell it as entertainment. And people eat it up. We are watching the second half of Romans chapter 1 play out before our very eyes. “And God gave them over....”

IIRC Marriage was a legal contract designed to protect the financial status of mothers and their children in the event of widowhood. This was before modern multiple marriages & divorces which has all the ingredients of polygamy without a fathers’ commitment.

This polygamous relationship seems to have restored this man’s position as head of the house. His *wives* and their children seem to be well-adjusted. More so than having two same sex parents. (Although they do have three mommies;)

Yup! Even on FR ... I just replied o someone else about another topic. They claim they don't agree with me or the person they are defending but boy will they DEFEND WHO THEY DO NOT AGREE WITH, with a vengeance. Hope that makes sense.

People are making less and less sense. It's EMOTIONALLY driven insanity. They don't THINK anymore and get off on watching perversion and defending it - even though “they wouldn't do THAT.” It's almost as though they are haughty about their OWN HYPOCRISY!

One can always find the exceptions that prove the rule.

As I’ve learned from our own home-grown Wahabis (Nation of Islam, FLDS), polygamy is evil by its very nature. It attracts evil men and breeds disrespect for the law, aggressive behavior towards outsiders, molestation and exploitation of children. Brutal dominance of women.

From the Arab world to Colorado City, AZ, they all seem to share an affinity for walled compounds...

It’s sick:

...

And why did Joseph Smith, on May 25, 1844, deny having any wives other than Emma Hale Smith?

Joseph Smith was indicted on charges of polygamy and adultery on May 23, 1844:

“The marriage to the Lawrence sisters became public knowledge when William Law, Joseph’s second counselor in the First Presidency, became alienated from the Prophet. Law, who had known the Lawrence family since their conversion in Canada, chose the marriage of Smith and Maria Lawrence as a test case with which to prosecute Smith for adultery. On May 23 he filed suit against the Mormon leader in Hancock Count Circuit Court, at Carthage, charging that Smith had been living with Maria Lawrence ‘in an open state of adultery’ from October 12, 1843, to the day of the suit.”

“In response, Smith flatly denied polygamy in a speech delivered on May 26: ‘What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can find only one.’ As polygamy was illegal under US law, Smith had little choice but to openly repudiate the practice. But as is often the case with secret policies that are denied publicly, Smith’s credibility would later suffer.”

“Realistically he must have understood that thirty-three or more marriages could not be kept a secret forever, and that when they became known the gulf between his public statements and private practice would come back to haunt him.”

...

Yes, ole Smith LIED!

I doubt this will normalize anything. Normal makes for boring TV, Big Love is a success because it has drama, if this show succeeds it will also be because of the drama. People like to see drama, but most don’t actually want to live it. Complicated lives tend to be unhappy lives (just look at how reality stars go through spouses), but they sure do make good TV.

We should use this against the moslums. Any mosque is a monument to polygammy and countless other abuses of women, the religion of islam is supportive of.

Finding the premise of the Polygamy show appalling - I stopped and asked myself how this situation differs from many modern marriages/divorces/remarriages that include siblings, half-siblings, step siblings and all manner of spousal algebra....with extra-marital affairs and serial adultery.

Think John Edwards!!!

And don’t get me started on same-sex marriages with sperm donations and egg harvesting.
