Can download 10MB file in seconds, but can't browse the web... (Vanity tech help)

I have satellite internet, which is going to be slower than DSL/Cable, but have experienced a strange phenomenon recently.

If you were to send me a link to a 10MB file to download, I could download it successfully in seconds.

However, I can barely browse web pages, as browsing the web is so slow I can barely use it.

Is this a TCP or DNS problem that can be adjusted?

I have scanned with many types of anti-malware (Malwarebytes) products and anti-virus (Bit Defender, Kaspersky, etc.) and it doesn't appear to be a virus issue.

Any help most appreciated. Thanks!

I wonder if it’s a latency issue? I had Wildblue for two years until Alltel came through. If powering down your modem doesn’t work, give your reseller/installer a call. There may be a gateway issue which, of course, you can’t find out because of the hang time.

Low on RAM?

The downloads are not using the resources your browser does. Have you tried running another application at the time your browser is bogged down? If the other application also bogs down then your problem should be with your system resources and not the network, no?

Funny thing though,
why would it resolve addresses for files quickly and not addresses for pages?

Smells like a bad browser plug in.

None of those open DNS numbers worked. When I tried using them, I couldn’t connect at all.

Used to have a router but a tech guy came out and unhooked it but never changed any settings to the PC.

Could that be the problem? Router unplugged/unhooked but old settings still present on PC?

If so, do you know where I can look to clear those out?

Thanks again for the tips/suggestions.

Is this the type of satellite internet that has you *sending* data over a phone line? The only satellite I’ve ever used did that - connect over a phone line (dialup) and receive data over satellite.

If that’s the case, then this behavior is normal and a result of your dialup. If your phone lines (ie: the ones running down the street) are old then there’s nothing you can do about it in this setup. I would check into cable, dsl, or the new wireless internet options being offered by some carriers.

Tried that many times to no avail (today, yesterday, the day before yesterday, etc.). Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I clicked the “Post” button and two minutes later it’s still trying to get this post to go thru.

Unrelated to your issue, but that is symtomatic of an FR problem that's been going on since June.

If it was a Firefox plug-in issue, then you would think IE (which I have no plug-in’s for) would fly like a champ, but I can’t even get IE to open a web page.

Something else I forgot to mention: whenever it gets light outside is when the internet gets slower. At 3am when I get up for work, I can do pretty much whatever I want. Browsing is fast as hell then.

Start, settings, Control panel, Network connections,
double click on network connections
click on support tab in local area connection status.

Click on repair.
What is your gateway setting?

That is a dish issue (weak signal), either dish pointing or obstruction
(trees etc.).

Time to call your provider.

I couple of months ago, I had a similar problem (cable Internet).

I finally called tech support. They sent out a guy who checked it and said the cause was the excessive summer weather (heat). He made some adjustments, said that the upstream was too low and downstream was too high.

After the adjustments, it was better, but not that great.

What kills me is the latency — lag time to connect to servers. I tried to explain that to the Tech. His response was that he didn’t know much about the Internet.

I do notice that Firefox is excessively slow. I tried upgrading, but the new version had some flash or java junk that created havoc. I stepped back to version 3.6.3. Firefox has always been a notorious resource/memory hog.

I recently tried Google Chrome. Webpages do load significantly faster, but Chrome doesn’t have the various add-ons/extenstions and options I am familiar with for Firefox.

I play around with Chrome, hoping to like it better -— so far, I don’t.

10.1.13.1

Put that address in your browser and see if a web page opens.
Your goal is to find your modem’s page.
There you can look at your signal strength.

I’ve called them many times.

The tech guy has been out here twice recently. He has no idea what the problem is.

He said it’s *possible* that a tree in the distance is in the way, but I said that the tree is in the same spot at 3am as it is at 3pm, so why a slow to no connection at 3pm but a fine connection at 3am? He had no answer to that.

The dish is already on top of my house which is two stories high and he said maybe dig a new hole in the ground and put in a 55-60 foot pole instead.

If I was convinced a tree was in the way, I probably would do that, but the evidence seems to prove otherwise.

There have been instances over the past month - for two or three hours at a time - when I can get on during the day and the speed is flying, but most of the time it’s next to nothing.

And I take note of what the weather is like when the speed is fast and it doesn’t seem to matter.

It won’t open with that number. It says “Problem loading page” and “Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 10.1.13.1.”
