He wanted to make sure his troops remembered what he said. I suppose. But, I have never read that Robert E Lee had to resort to gutter language. Today, we are inundated with so much of it, that profanity has lost its shock value. All it really signifies is a deficient vocabulary.

I use the “original” along with the variations in French, German and Spanish (w/the bandaleroed Ricky Ricardo looking version) as my screeensaver/wallpaper at work, most people chuckle at it.

On 9/11, the Hijackers "took the conversational high road" by exclaiming, "Allah Akbar".
