Saturday Night Doggie Thread
10-2-10 | Me!

Posted on 10/02/2010 10:37:46 PM PDT by Brad’s Gramma

Tonight I want to hear of your favorite Animal Rescue Organization. Where would YOU go to if you were to adopt a dog and give it it's forever home?

Please share your stories about your rescue dogs and the folks who rescued them for you.

The one I support and would get another dog if circumstances warranted ... is German Shepherd of Orange County.

Their site is HERE!

There are others all over the country — I did some searches, unfortunately I didn’t save the link. But I was surprised how many organizations are out there dedicated to saving animals. I think animals are in great need of compassion and help, since they are so dependent on people and are so grateful for the help.

Animal Lifeline of Iowa, Inc. is a no-kill special needs animal shelter that accepts unowned dogs and cats who are handicapped, injured, have a serious medical condition, pregnant or nursing, and orphans that need to be bottle fed. Animal Lifeline (ALI) is supported solely by donations.
ALI is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.

My SO cannot be around any animals because of the dander. Gizmo is basically hypo=allergenic. No shedding and no dander. But, lots of love!

Best Friends Animal Society were willing to take a FeLV+ kitten that I found. They also rehabilitated several of Michael Vick's pit bulls.

Oh how adorable!

My cousin and her husband rescue paps and sometimes fly them to their new homes!

This is a great place I first heard about on FR, of course. Their site is interesting, and they not only have hundreds of kitties, but some dogs, too, last time I visited the site.

Some months ago, my husband found a little Chihuahua wandering on a busy street in the next town. She was blind in both eyes, looks like she had quite a few litters, and someone had notched both her ears, perhaps with a cigarette.

We posted our finding of her at the local shelter, but nobody came looking for her. While I was afraid she might be claimed by a former abusive owner it was also possible that someone else had taken her in and she just got out and wandered off, since she can’t see.

She is a great pet, and we may have at least one of her eyes fixed so she can see. Although we love our other dog, who was a “purchased” Russell Terrier, we wouldn’t trade the little street dog for anything.

I volunteered there for a couple of vacations. I highly recommend doing that. Had a blast! It’s sooooooooo beautiful there, and the animals look so happy!

Oops—meant to say I volunteered at Best Friends in Kanab, Utah. My understanding at the time was that they only accepted animals that were scheduled to be euthanized if not adopted out of shelters. They also took dogs from the war zone and had yurts for them (Afghanistan, maybe?) Don’t remember.

All my cats are former strays. They don’t seem to miss the street much.

I was under the impression that they took other hard-to-adopt cases, but maybe my FeLV+ kitten was a special case. OTOH, any shelter I brought her to would probably have euthanized her.

LDDR is legit and I gave a forever home to a senior from a kill shelter....This organization goes into kill shelters and rescues dogs due to be put down the following day...she cost me 100 dollara and over the next 1 1/2 years over 400 dollars in vet bills. I was happy to do it as she was a sweet old bitch....her and my dog would take walks with me together but they only tolerated each other. But amazinly they taught each other....my dog learned not to run in panic from a vacuum and my rescue learned not to watch me eat and drool..as my other dog would lay down and turn her back to me when I was eating....they do learn from each other and the 3 of us could play on the floor but they were never big buddies....
