Hey I thought it was Charles Martel and the Battle of Roncevalle (sp?) at the Spain/France mountain border that saved Europe and Christianity.
The Battle of Roncevalle was fought by Charlemagne’s commander of his rear guard, Roland. It was a defeat. The Battle of Tours, won by Charles Martel, was Islam’s furthest incursion in the west. Vienna was the furthest incursion of Islam in southeast Europe. Lepanto was the furthest incursion of the Islamic Turks in the Mediterranean. Since those battles Islam has lost ground in the west until the later 20th century.
The Hammer did what he did, and it stopped an Muzzie invasion of western Europe. Over the next half-millennium, more, the Iberians whittled the Moslem minority rulers down and ultimately booted them out and back into Africa. The Spanish and Portuguese also worked on trying to expand their rule into NW Africa. Spanish Sahara has a phony “indigenous” (Moslem) settler population that was put together and supported by the Algerians; the UN and UK support the settlers. Michael Palin (of Monty Python fame) did one of his partly fun/partly boring travel documentaries in Africa, and visited the settlers, also eulogized ‘em and soft-soaped the Libyan and Algerian dictatorships.
