1st Windows Phone ads blame other phones for stop-and-stare

Early forms of the first Windows Phone 7 ads have surfaced (video below) through a leak this morning that show how Microsoft plans to pitch its mobile OS against its rivals. The two unfinished spots accuse devices like the BlackBerry and iPhone of promoting a culture of staring at smartphones instead of dealing with life itself. Windows Phone 7's at-a-glance home screen tiles help find info faster and help focus on family and friends, the ads discovered by WMPowerUser claim.

Both ads also make clear reference to an AT&T version of the HTC Mondrian (also known as Schubert and possibly the HD7) and indicate that it will be one of the launch devices. The full-touch phone should be strictly on par with competitors through a 4.3-inch but 800x480 touchscreen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a five-megapixel camera with 720p recording and 8GB of non-removable storage.

An official appearance for WP7 devices isn't expected until an October 11 open house in New York City; they may beat the November release in the US with an appearance as early as October 21.

The existence of multiple commercials shows Microsoft's determination to regain as much of its lost standing in smartphones as possible. It's believed to be spending as much as $500 million on marketing just in the fall alone to get attention for WP7 right as Apple, Google and RIM may reach their peaks for the year. Microsoft has lost most of its influence on the world stage as it's almost entirely excluded out of the top five smartphone designers but has also been knocked down in the US, a country once considered Microsoft's most secure territory. Many of its once-loyal partners have since shifted most or all of their attention to Android.

I wound up stopping and staring when I found the article.

...promoting a culture of staring at smartphones instead of dealing with life itself.

Too late, everybody under 40 does that already. When my kids are home for a visit, I pull out my old rotary telephone and stare at it. Drives them nuts!

Microsoft is hanging it’s hopes upon giant icons?

I played with one a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine that works in a related area at Microsoft showed me one. It’s very good. His was a way-early dogfood version, but I can see that it’s going to be a serious competitor.

I’m a blackberry guy myself, and just got a Torch, which I just love. I tried an iPhone for a month or so... but it just fails in corporate integration, management and security.

Well, all this time, everyone has been accusing Microsoft of ripping off the OS X Interface. In this case however, Microsoft dug deeper... did more research. Their inspiration for the new phone interface? Apple's "At Ease" Finder front-end!

I’m looking forward to playing with one. From all the pictures and videos, the tiled home screen seems super efficient, but strikes me as slightly claustrophobic. A psychological reaction that makes me chuckle, but sincere all the same.

Oh man, you brought back some great memories of POWERFUL APPS!

Canvas 3.0
Authorware
Adobe Type Manager
ClarisCAD
AudioShop!

Those were the bleeding edge in 1989. Those were the days!

Ooh, drop the screen resolution to 640 x 480 and there you go ... an innovative interface for the Microsoft smartphone OS.

Oh, I'd say it sizes up nicely with the others that are out there. The interface is intuitive, the touch screen is as good as the others I've tried. Screen is very hi-res (don't know offhand the exact spec). Movies play beautifully. But where it will probably win most is with the exchange/ outlook / office integration. With bitlocker encryption and key escrow in the AD it will be competitive in the corporate market with the Blackberry... which so far has had that world pretty much nailed.

iPhone and Droid (etc.) still depend on third-party products for encryption and central management. That's been their biggest problem in the corporate IT environment, IMHO.

Remember the old advertisement, “aren’t you glad you use Dial? Don’t you wish everybody did?” Could make it into a killer ringtone. ;’)

Hey, there’s a large market for just-a-phone-and-none-of-that-other-crap.

It’s underserved, imho.
