Point du Hoc was one of the most heavily bombed areas in Europe for a time.

Bombers returning from runs over France and Germany that were unable to drop their bombs were instructed to drop over Point du Hoc rather than into the Channel.

Hundreds of crater holes still remain at the site, along with the remains of destroyed pillboxes, tobruks, and other emplacements.
