Only until they show that butt-ugly amazon lesbian old lady... then, it's BACK to the HISTORY Channel!
No, that's "Dissed or Dissing". Disrespect is quite legit.
Over here, the chavs say “disrespectin’”. Funny, innit? With a lower life expectancy than the educated middle classes you’d think they wouldn’t have the time to be that pedantic!
Oh, definitely, as long as we can whip up public support. But if there is a TEA Party here, I've never seen any evidence of it.
To be honest grass roots activism is the sort of thing America does far better than we Brits do.
Our idea of getting exorcised on an issue, is to say, "Bout that... aye... it's all wrong isn't it...", shrug, tut, and have another cup of tea (sorry, coffee - note to self, STOP FUELLING THE STEREOTYPE).
Trouble is, as soon as big money and big names get involved in a grass roots movement over here, the entire press (left wing and right are both as bad in this regard) will conclude that the movement is a vanity project, and they focus on the faces not the material.
I can't exactly say the results were promising when UKIP (Nigel Farage) and Veritas (Robert Kilroy-Silk) became more about their figureheads than about their policies.
Same can be said of the Respect Party - which was supposed to be a grass roots anti-war coalition party and started to gain support... but then, thankfully, it turned into the "George Galloway, you know the Saddam Hussein worshipper who did Celebrity Big Brother" Party.
That's another cultural difference between America and Britain - where you guys celebrate people with "get up and go" and who've made a name for themselves, Brits who get involved in politics after making a name for themselves in another field - with the honourable exception of Joanna Lumley - are IMMEDIATELY regarded as glory-hunting imbeciles who're doing it purely as a publicity stunt for their own personal benefit.
My experiences with the New Party and Veritas and Jury Team suggest that if we did have a grass roots movement it would have to STAY a grass roots movement and we'd have to keep big bucks bankrollers, rich celebrities, rich ex-politicians and the like as far away from the front row of the movement as possible. But there's always a place for Joanna Lumley, after what she did for the Gurkhas. Plus, she made the leftist Ministers in the last government, cower in shame.

As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America. We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc. We also oppose the United Nations or any other world government body that may attempt to impose its will or rule over our sovereign nation and sovereign people. We believe in defending our borders, our constitution and our national sovereignty.
Thanks!
(I had read that post before but I guess it’s always worth bringing up).
Well ... I DID watch "Glee" last nite - but only because they were doing a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" tribute.
Takes me back to my "salad days" in college ...
Been here before.
You seem familiar.
Nope, but I’ve been on many, many other talkboards in the past (I was on CNN for a long time but that was donkey’s years ago) so it’s possible you’ve seen me elsewhere.
England and Scotland are "constituent countries" of the United Kingdom (so both are states within a sovereign nation state). Occasionally, the default assumption of a Brit who doesn't know better, might be along the lines of:
It's obviously not a perfect analogy by any stretch of the imagination, but as a starting point it does occasionally prevent some really stupid assumptions from being made.
How annoyed would you guys be, if a British poster appeared on Free Republic, asking why Arnold Schwarzenegger or Eric Holder wasn't being held to account over some decision taken by the Texas State Supreme Court?
I guess a lot, but then you could say the same about the reaction of English posters on an English talkboard, to being asked by an American why the English Parliament wasn't being held to account over the release of the Lockerbie bomber. In either situation, that analogy would've helped.
All we know about Scottish Law we learned from Arlen Specter.
...and soon he will be free to go practice law in Scotland.
Ever been to Eden Camp in Malton? I highly recommend it, it's a fantastic museum.
I hope this helps.
Yes, I know Selby (I’m only five minutes from the A63 to Selby), York, Malton and Scarborough very well. Eden Camp is a very moving place and it really spells out the difference between British and German attitudes towards the treatment of POWs.
