UK F1 driver Jenson Button carjacked in Brazil

Armed attackers have targeted British Formula 1 driver Jenson Button in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, his McLaren racing team have confirmed.

His car was attacked, but Button was unhurt, McLaren said.

Button had been in practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, and will start 11th on the grid.

Brazil's major cities have a bad record for serious crimes of violence, which have caused concern ahead of major events like the 2014 World Cup.

"Would-be assailants made an attempt to approach the car that was carrying Jenson Button" on Saturday, said the statement from McLaren.

Button, 33, was quickly driven away by an armed policemen in the reinforced armoured vehicle provided by McLaren.

Button's manager Richard Goddard and trainer Mike Collier were also in the vehicle.

"The police driver of Jenson's vehicle reacted swiftly and, using avoidance techniques, rapidly forced his way through the traffic, taking Jenson and the other occupants of the car immediately away from any danger and back to their hotel," McLaren said.

The team added "the Sao Paulo authorities have also acted efficiently and will be providing additional security" on for Button and other team members on Sunday.

Somehow my DVR missed both practice and qualifying. Wow, Hulkenberg on pole, would have never thought that was possible after the year they have had. They’ve been 2nd tier all season (strong, but not fighting for top 5 finishes), and to go #1 and 6 on the grid is awesome for them.

Poor Button, he has really had a tough time these last 4-5 races.

Poor Jenson. nice bloke who was very fortunate he was not hurt. I also feel bad for Webber. I like Vettel but Webber is obviously miserable because Dieter probably likes Vettel.

My guess is Webber is not at RB in 2011. I hope it is Vettel’s friend Kimi. It is no coincidence that Kimi’s rally sponsor on the Peugeot jnr team is Red Bull.

I did not see “qually” as Alonso calls it. I think it had been raining and it had started to dry. The Hulkster go on slicks.

Awesome. There was scuttlebutt that he was fighting for his job, might have saved his future in F1 with that drive, even if it is not with Williams.

I doubt the rest of the teams have it. Brazil has always been dangerous with crime for the teams.

Kimi and Vettel are friends and as soon as Kimi went to WRC to drive - he had a Red Bull sponsorship. I think he had the deal before he left Ferrari.

I prefer Vettel to win the WC followed by Alonso but maybe now I want Webber. He probably deserves it. He has pushed “the next Schumacher” all season long.

found it...

“Teams are always on the watch for attempted armed attacks on members leaving the circuit after previous incidents over the years despite a strong police presence.

Members of the Toyota team were ambushed at gunpoint four years ago as they left the circuit, with shots fired by a gang of youths who also tried to kick in their car windows. None suffered any injury.”
