Collaring a new breed of police dog
LA Times ^ | 11/7/2010 | John Glionna

The puppies jostled for position, gnawing on one another's tails and rolling in the grass of the outdoor pen. The two Los Angeles policemen watched them with the cool calculation they might give suspects in a crime lineup.

Officer Jeff Miller dangled a ball on a string to see if one of the seven dogs would bite — chase a would-be prey and pass the test.

"The white female," he said to his partner, Sgt. Doug Roller, without taking his gaze from the animal. "That one likes the ball."

The K-9 officers had come to Asia in search of a new breed of partner. Veteran dog trainers in the LAPD's Metropolitan Division, they brought a combined 50 years' experience in assessing animals that become a police officer's most-trusted ally.

For years, the LAPD has relied mostly on such European bloodlines as German and Dutch shepherds and Belgian Malinois. But the handlers are conducting an experiment of sorts: gauging whether Jindo dogs native to this isolated island have the instincts for big-city police work — an often dangerous job that includes weapons detection and chasing down armed criminals.

Brought to Korea by invading Mongolian armies in the 13th century, the midsize Jindos are known for their intelligence and hunting skills. They're so beloved here that they've been declared a cultural treasure.

Although breeders three years ago began promoting Jindos as potentially the newest generation of K-9 dog, even Korean police have yet to use them. During a July visit to the U.S., breeders offered four dogs free of charge to police departments in Los Angeles and Glendale, making arrangements to bypass a law that makes it difficult, and often illegal, to export purebred Jindos from South Korea.

I've never even heard of this breed, probably because there are laws against exporting them according to the article.

I know a couple of people who have these dogs. They are amazingly smart, and very very fast on their feet. Interesting dogs.

I suspect they are a flavor of the month. Thru the years there have been various breeds touted. In the end they all have their good points and bad points. These don’t sound particularly suitable, but who knows. There may be some individuals that will be excellent at some types of police work. They sound a little like shibas. I wouldn’t want one, but some people love them.

jindo gae

There are plenty of them outside korea. The law to ban export isn’t that old. Japan has similar dog breeds. The shiba inu, and hokkaido dog for example.

The reason they go outside the US for decent police dogs is because americans rapidly ruin dog breeds by breeding for appearance. The american jindo dog is worthless crap. So is the american german shepherd. Basically, the only dogs we got here that don’t degenerate via poor breeding practices are labs and similar gun dogs. and even these have evolved into two separate strains...the show strain and the working strain. the show strain is almost always worthless crap.

Nice looking dog.

I think the tales should be turned on the thugs and the police should start using Pit Bulls.

They are fast, smart and tenacious and very good about obeying commands.

And, it would have the added benefit of pissing off Chet99.

It seems that a German Shepherd will outweigh it but, according to this link, a Jindo is highly loyal to it's owner but considers everything else as prey.

With so much inbreeding, "good" German Shepherds may be getting harder to find.

“Bigger Jack Russell. Next!”

If my Jack weighed a hundred pounds he’d be against the law. They’re ferocious.

Our wonderful 13 year old dog is 3/4 ACD and 1/4 border collie. Smartest dog we’ve ever know with an incredible “go to the ball” instinct. He would have been a great rescue dog, not big enough for police work. Not a particularly great nose but wonderful to please.

Our Shepherds are German imports,German breeders are constrained by severe rules. The result is very good dogs.Quick, smart and very fierce when needed.

“The reason they go outside the US for decent police dogs is because americans rapidly ruin dog breeds by breeding for appearance.”

Any dog added to the AKC becomes a caricature of itself
and is ruined.

I brought a dog into the country from an isolated island off the coast of Africa. An amazing creature and so very different
from the dogs here. Also so protective of us that I would
fear being on the other side of his gaze.

We recently rescued a Malinois mix male 10 months old. He learns very quickly, doesn’t have the hard headed stubborness I’m accustomed to in my bulldog. On the other hand, he doesn’t have the bulldog tenacity and acceptance of new things. My pitbull is cool with whatever - heat, cold, exposure, wet, dry, no food, loud noises, masses of people, no people, gunfire, whatever. He’ll climb ascent ladders, cable across rocks slopes and bodies of water - he’s all heart. The Malinois mix not so much - spent the first camping trip under the truck shivering and crying. Maybe he’ll get better. He is a great watchdog though.
