“but if they can’t do it legally - they need to stop.”

A few observations on the above. First is the obvious one, the similarity with the Hispanic culture’s “ES LA LEY” meaning It Is The Law.

AN infamous German variant on order v. flexibility is “Alles In Ordnung!” - Everything In Order.

If the kids can’t sell cupcakes in a park because of a law, that law needs modification to allow kids to do things which do earn money.

When the law is an ass, often it is because an ass is the law. Being an ‘originalist proctologist’, so to speak, I recommend that all laws that make illegal activities which build the character of the young should be repealed. Do it lest peals of laughter, followed by voter revenge cause the Political Nomenklatura Critter to have to seek gainful employment.

Sorry, Born in Tacoma, but live in Clark County now.
I agree on the hours at the market, and I will try to get the name down.
I used to like rules, but now my thing is as much freedom as we can stand. I don’t see the need for most of them (Hey, were all adults here!)

I remember a study that a black conservative did, pointing out that under slavery blacks had more freedom to engage in commerce then they do now in Washington DC. Now they are saddled with permits and all sorts on nonsense.

It like our four freedoms. Each one is annoying and dangerous in its own right. Freedom of Speech? Can really be ANNOYING! And Dangerous. Same thing with Religion and arms.

One of the things I like about living in the country on Ag land is there is little I can do that is against the rules!

Children are not adults and they do not pose a threat to other businesses and certainly not to any of the other reasons that licensing and permits are required.

Of course somebody gets sick from food that was not properly handled, it will be the cities fault for not enforcing existing laws.

Rob,

Just a question that I forgot to ask. What sort of horror would ensue if the musicians were unpermitted? Why do the need to be permitted? Is there actually an argument in favor of this, or does it have to do with revenue generation?

>>What sort of horror would ensue if the musicians were unpermitted?<<

There are too darned many of them. (BTW, I am a musician myself.)

Imagine what would happen if it really was a free-for-all. You’d have musicians (most of them virtually without skill or talent) competing 15 feet apart from each other, every 15 feet.

Wherever people gather in large numbers, it is a magnet for every wanna be juggler, guitar player, and every other person attempting to make a buck off a skill that is easy to acquire, to practice for the occasional quarter. Heck, even I thought of doing it to harden my chops. And even the way it’s set up now, many of the street musicians are guys that have the playing skills of a child that has been to two months of guitar training.

Nobody would be killed, true, but it is just more civilized when the government makes it a little harder for just anyone to plop down and start making a racket with an out of tune guitar missing two strings - or selling non-homogenized milk that was sitting in their barn for a week.

Yes, it’s a fine line that many governments have stepped FAR over into becoming a pure revenue source, but the alternative is not a pretty thing. It would ruin many of the street fairs, markets, etc. around the country. And, for the people visiting the location, it DOES work.

Now, a private event, on private property, is a whole ‘nother animal.

There is a very good reason why food like this shouldn’t be sold or offered to the public in this manner.

First person that keels over dead after eating one....and you will all understand it better.

I can sort of see your point, and it is a local control issue... But I think they would manage to sort them selves out.
Being in Ag I tend to have a knee jerk reaction to rules. It is unlikely that anyone would sell week old milk, because you want your customers to come back, alive, and with out a pitch fork.

I sell pigs, send them off to a USDA butcher shop that smokes and cures the meat.
Thanks to USDA rules, the smallest portion I can sell you is 1/2 of a pig, unless I send the live to a slaughter house. This rule only servers the large slaughter houses. There is no way I would want to sell tainted meat to a customer. As you can guess this really cuts down on the customer base. They need to have a large freezer, and want to have all cuts, and the ability to consume this much of a pig over a 6 month period.

Why isn't the fact that I sent them to a usda approved butcher shop good enough? I would contend that it is just a matter of supporting businesses that can get regulation passed that works for them.

I really think we’re pretty much on the same page here. I’ll add this though: I think the reason the government created the rules in the first place is tht there are all sorts of people. Some are just lazy about certain things. They do not INTENTIONALLY sell you tainted meat or bad milk, but, well, some people are just more responsible than others.

But I would like to see the government err in the direction of too much freedom, as opposed to too much control.

Sorry, can’t accept your implication that the cop would have shot the kids had they not obeyed him.

Then you're a fool.

In the same way we expect soldiers to carry out official orders, we also expect cops to enforce laws.

Do you think that sidearm on their hips is a negotiating tool of some kind?

You sir, were a plesure to talk to, unlike about 1/2 of the folks out there.

BTW, I am trying to start a cidery (basically a winery using apples) and you should see the paper work involved. Almost as crazy as going organic.
