Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - banausic
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 11/17/2010

Posted on 11/17/2010 3:50:40 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

banausic \buh-NAW-sik\

relating to or concerned with earning a living -- used pejoratively; also - utilitarian, practical

Example sentence:

The heiress dismissively declared that she would never have to worry about such banausic concerns as holding down a job.

Extra example: "At the far end was a wooden board on which were hung saws, chisels, knives and other banausic instruments of the trade." -- From Sebastian Faulk's 2005 novel Human Traces

Did you know?
The ancient Greeks held intellectual pursuits in the highest esteem, and they considered ideal a leisurely life of contemplation. A large population of slaves enabled many Greek citizens to adopt that preferred lifestyle. Those who had others to do the heavy lifting for them tended to regard professional labor with contempt. Their prejudice against the need to toil to earn a living is reflected in the Greek adjective "banausikos" (the root of “banausic”), which not only means “of an artisan” (from the word for artisan, "banausos") but “nonintellectual” as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD.

Can anyone really expect Charlie Rangle to concern himself with banausic details such as ethics rules.

Rangel Is Found to Have Violated House Ethics Rules [update: guilty of all but one charge]

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

Only days left until BO's replacement is sworn in.

IT'S ABOUT DANG TIME!!!

Get to class you slackers! I've opened a new classroom, but Dave forgot to get the gradebook from xsmommy. So if you're looking for a grade you'll have to ping her. Secret Garden and Tioga are usually pretty generous with the plusses if you compliment their shapely legs, so you might try submitting your homework to them instead. My secret for getting extra plusses on my A+ from xs will remain a secret between me and her, so you're on your own if you want her to review your work.

Welcome to class students.

Only days until Christmas.

OK, now I have to get dressed, grab some breakfast, and get on in to the office away from my office.

Obama is too preoccupied with bowing to foreign potentates, gutting the economy and generally destroying the Nation to concern himself with the banausic concerns of the American citizenry.

"OK, now I have to get dressed, grab some breakfast, and get on in to the office away from my office."

And were you, perhaps, expecting sympathy over such banausic trifles?

Rats, it was pulled.
Am I the only one who thinks there is a conspiracy afoot about PBS cutting Tina Fey's snide remarks about Palin at her acceptance speech for some faux accolade and now they are getting more airplay and talk than they ever would have originally? Honestly, who do they think they are fooling?

If not, it works too.

she has to know that the only people still laughing are the hard core leftwingers, the rest are sick to death of her sad little tired schtick. i guess she’s desperately clinging to it, since it’s the most success she’s ever had.
