"Caprica:" the autopsy
Vanity | 11/17/10

As many here know, SyFy's "Caprica" was unceremoniously pulled several weeks ago. Pulled so fast that there remain five unaired episodes. Pulled so fast that the cast first learned of it on the net.

What has been printed so far suggests that there were "script problems" that led the producers to pull it faster than a woman grabbing wedding dresses at a Filene's Basement Bride Sale. That the show had failed to find an audience. That the story arcs of monotheists being murdered by the state and a teenager's mind being inserted into a killer robot (noted as 'icky') were just too much for the audience.

The show had some very good acting and an inventive story line. Apparently, not enough to keep it from being blown-up in mid-season.

Web sources say the studio is now working an a second prequel to "Battlestar Galactrica," to show Adama in his academy days. Who knows what the real story might be.

We will end up finding that young Adama was caught making out with a battle-bot.

Did they make it to earth on Gallactica? I was never able to watch as much of it as I would have.

FYI: Caprica is still airing in Canada and the episodes are still showing up on bittorent sites. Episodes 14 and 15 are out and episode 16 will probably drop tomorrow.

Maybe SyFy canceled Caprica because it has nothing to do with hunting ghosts or professional wrestling.

Liked the cast (Polly Walker of Enchanted April fame is always great) but the plots were muddled but it lacks the suspense of BSF because we know what’s going to happen.

The problem with Caprica is that the plot was too often glacial, compared to BSG.

That new SyFy thing is really working out. They have two shows about knuckleheads traipsing through places looking for ghosts and other things that don’t exist, the CGI human-eating monster of the week and wrestling, but Caprica manages not to be able to find a level to remain in that august company of programming. Yeah, it’s really much better and different than when it was the Sci-Fi Channel.

Not enough sci-fi for me.

Maybe it would have fit more on the Lifetime Sy-Fy Network?

They dropped it because the ratings sucked. And probably the DVD sales weren’t very good. Bad ratings can be forgiven if the DVD sells well, but bad ratings and bad sales will kill it quick. It’s too bad, it was a good show, but from the first frames it had no mass appeal.

Yes. But it required plot holes big enough to drive a Cylon Resurrection Ship through.

Had promise but the show just got slower and slower. Took me three days to watch the season premier because I kept getting bored and going to do something else.

Did they make it to earth on Gallactica?

Yes, they did, but it was about 150,000 before the beginning of human civilization.

The show ended with a strong suggestion that the one woman ("Eve") from which all humans are believed to be descended was actually the child born to the two BG pilots (one of which was a Cylon).

Caprica had too much of the soap opera and not enough of the typical scifi action.

SyFy had been trying to attract more female viewers, and that is reflected in the ‘syfy-exclusive’ and made-for-syfy content.

Twice, three times if you count a earlier episode segment. And then really depends on the interpretation of “Earth”.

but it lacks the suspense of BSF because we know what’s going to happen.

It takes spectacular writing and acting to keep viewers on the edge of their seats even though they know what will happen in the end. Apollo 13 pulled that off. Caprica didn't.

SciFi also did the amazingly stupid, stupid, stupid stunt of a multi-month gap in the middle of the season. That is the kiss of death for a serial program. I don't think even 24 could have survived as 12 & 12. I watched it through the first half season and have 4 or 5 episodes after they came back saved on my DVR, but I lost interest in the story in the interim. Split seasons on serial programs do not work! Networks, stop doing it. You're just wasting money and killing programs.

I hope the next BSG spin-off does better.

I liked Caprica but I’m not going to watch the rest now that it’s canceled. There’s nowhere for it to go.

I actually liked the first two seasons of the new BSG - sometimes I thought it was scary good! Then there was the third season - I watched the whole season holding out hope but really disliked it and as a result I never watched season 4.
